Plot

While traveling in his Tornado, Sonic makes a landing on West Side Island. After a few days, he realizes that he is being followed by a two-tailed fox. He tries to run away, but the fox spins its tails like a helicopter to catch up to the hedgehog. Sonic is impressed by her skill, and lets her join him. The fox introduces himself as Miles Prower, better known as Tails. [ 1 ]

A few days later, Sonic and Tails hear an explosion in the center of the island. The large forest has been destroyed and robots surround the area. Sonic knows what it is: Dr. Eggman is back, and he has decided to use the power of the Chaos Emeralds again to power the Death Egg, a moon-sized space station . Sonic and Tails set out to locate the emeralds before Eggman does. [ 1 ]

Gameplay

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is a 2D platform video game . The game stars the character of the same name and his companion, Miles "Tails" Prower, a two-tailed fox who was not present in the first game in the franchise. [ 2 ] [ 3 ] The player controls Sonic while Tails runs alongside him. A second player can join at any time and control Tails separately. On the options screen, the player can change to just Sonic or Tails. [ 4 ] [ 5 ] In the original version of the game, there is no difference in the gameplay of the two characters, as both have practically identical abilities. [ 6 ] However, in the mobile version, Tails received the ability to fly. [ 7 ]

The game takes place over a series of levels, each divided into one, two, or three stages, with Robotnik serving as the boss at the end of each final stage. Certain levels have unique features, such as "Emerald Hill" featuring corkscrew-like "loops", and "Chemical Plant" featuring boost buttons that instantly put Sonic at his top speed. [ 3 ] The character can jump on enemies to defeat them. The game also features a new move, the "spin dash" or "Super Dash Attack", in which the player curls up into a ball and spins while standing still, resulting in a speed boost. [ 8 ] When the player is attacked by an enemy without rings, is crushed, falls off-screen, drowns, or exceeds the level's time limit, they lose a life and are returned to the beginning of the level or the last checkpoint , with no lives remaining, and the game over screen is displayed . [ 9 ]

When the player collects at least 50 rings and passes a checkpoint, they can be transported to a special stage. [ 10 ] In this location, the player travels through a pseudo-3D halfpipe -shaped path , collecting rings and avoiding bombs. A certain amount of rings must be collected to pass each of the three checkpoints, and in turn, to obtain the emerald itself. If Sonic collides with a bomb, he loses ten rings and is momentarily immobilized. The stages increase in difficulty, and the player cannot enter any stage without passing the previous one. After finishing, the player is transported back to the star rank they used to enter the special stage, with their touch count reset. [ 4 ] [ 11 ] When all the emeralds have been collected, Sonic can transform into Super Sonic, after collecting 50 rings and jumping. [ 10 ] [ 12 ] Super Sonic is invincible to attacks, has more speed and greater range in his jumps, however, he loses a ring per second and returns to normal Sonic after his rings run out. [ 12 ]

The game also features a competitive mode, where two players race each other to the finish line, using either Sonic or Tails, in a split-screen race through three of the regular levels and one special stage. After one player finishes one of the regular levels, the other player must finish the zone within 60 seconds, or the level ends instantly. In the regular levels, players are ranked in five areas (score, time, rings held at the end of the level, total rings collected, and the number of item boxes broken). The player with the most category wins wins the level. In the Special Stage, players compete to obtain the most rings. The mode ends when all stages are completed, or if one player loses all of their lives, in which case their opponent automatically wins. [ 13 ]
