Sonic.exe The Lost Genesis Prototype

Years ago, a Sonic Genesis prototype was developed but never released. The project was abruptly abandoned after the sudden disappearance of Sonic during testing, leaving the game incomplete and shrouded in mystery.

Now, the lost prototype has resurfaced. Sonic is missing, and his closest allies — Tails, Knuckles, Metal Sonic, and Eggman — each venture through familiar zones to uncover the truth behind his disappearance.

a powerful entity known only as Genesis.Proto, is born from corrupted data deep within the game’s code. This force threatens not only Sonic but the very reality of their world.

so basically tom went to visit sega and they gave him an unfinished sonic game which was never released to the public, and that's how sonic.exe was made (in my take)
