I AM HIM and I AM SORRY
The game requires the player to manually save their data by pressing the N key (F5 before the rebranding) in order to keep the progress for once they exit the game. Failing to do this will result in the loss of all of the player's data. To access the data that the player has saved previously, the player has to manually load it in later by pressing the M key (F6 before the rebranding).

Development History
On December 23rd, 2014, a Game Jolt user named BFPFilms424 (real name Tyler Ahlström) released the first ever iteration of the game under the name "Five Nights at Freddy's 3", as the official FNaF 3 wasn't out around that time. While some people figured out that it was fan-made, others thought that it was the real FNaF3 and sent complaints to Scott Cawthon. Due to widespread confusion and controversy among the community about the game and it's name, he changed the name of the game to "Five Nights at Freddy's 3 Fan-Made" to help alleviate this. Soon after this, Scott Cawthon contacted Tyler asking him to change the game's name completely so that no more possible confusion could occur, with Tyler deciding to rename the game to "The Return to Freddy's". He re-released it under that name on January 5th, 2015.
Differences between the game's iterations
There are three main iterations of The Return to Freddy's Classic ("Five Nights at Freddy's 3", "Five Nights at Freddy's 3 Fan-Made" and the current iteration). These all have many notable differences between each other.
Differences between FNaF 3 and FNaF 3 Fan-Made a.k.aTETF
The monitor drained the player's power much faster in the original version of the game in comparison to how it was in the rebranded version. This change carried over to the game's final rebranding.
The jumpscare noise was originally completely different in the original version of the game. The one originally used was taken from a fan-made Five Nights at Freddy's 3 trailer created by a animation group called "GoldenLane Studio", while the scream used in the rebranded version of the game is the one from Five Nights at Freddy's 2. This change carried over to the game's final rebranding.
The Custom Night icons for Bonnie and Chica were also taken directly from the original Five Nights at Freddy's in the original version of the game, while in the rebranded version of the game, their icons are taken directly from Five Nights at Freddy's 2 (although Bonnie's is edited to include her face). This change carried over to the game's final rebranding.
Differences between FNaF 3 Fan-Made a.k.a TETF and TRTF Classic
An additional animatronic was included in the game's roster in the first two versions of the game who was named Sugar, but she was removed during the game's final rebranding.
Shadow Dug originally looked look very different within the first two versions of the game when in comparison to how he looks within the game's final rebranding. Within the original two versions of the game, he appears to be much lankier and skinnier than he is within the final version of the game.
The doors were originally able to be opened and closed freely in the game's original two versions, however they do not actually do anything to aid the player or drain the player's power. This is in heavy contrast to the immobile doors in the final version of the game.
Their textures also originally were the exact same as in the original Five Nights at Freddy's in the original two versions of the game, without the edits applied to them in Photoshop that were done to make them look like they were broken which were added into the game in it's final version.
In the intro cutscene of the game, the desk in front of you originally did not have any plushies and toys on top of it within the game's first two versions, which is in heavy contrast to how it looks in the final version of the game where it is covered in many.
The keys for saving and loading the player's progress were different. Within the final version of the game, the player has to use N to save their game and M to load their game. In the original two versions of the game, the player has to use F5 to save their game and F6 to load their game.
The Return To Freddy's REMASTERED (2015) was a cancelled remastered of the original TRTF that Tyler Ahlström was planning to start development of back in April of 2015, after TRTF 3 was finished and fully released. However, soon after the project was announced the page was deleted and the game was cancelled, likely before Tyler even started developing it.
Over the years, many of its contents have been leaked from one of its first versions of the game. Including sprites, teasers, and screenshots of gameplay. Pressumabely, one of the mods in the original TRTF server actually had a build of this game. He streamed it and some screenshots were taken but were lost in time. According to multiple people, he showed a cutscene where Shadow Lockjaw stared at the screen with static. There was a mini-game afterwards however the stream ended due to Tyler telling the mod to stop, but these are rather pretty bold claims as some of the possibilites have not been greenlighted as being facts.
According to Tyler, there was a Second mode in the game where you played as Shadow Dug and collected pages, not unlike Slender. Although not a single picture or gameplay video has been shown of that to the public.
The concept was possibly later re-used for TRTF 5's TRTF:Online before ultimately being scrapped.

The Return to Freddy's Classic would have received a major update in 2016 (along with all of the other games from Volume 1). This would've included original models, new mechanics, minigames, and more. However, these updates were eventually scrapped, the new models and changes never being shown. According to Toonster (one of the former developers of TRTF 5), Tyler showed him during a skype call the .mfa file of the updated TRTF Classic, which had completly nothing done yet.
These major updates were eventually cancelled however they were uncancelled for a time in 2017 and put under the control of TannerFeline, until they were cancelled once again. In 2018, Tyler had actually wanted to and started remaking all of the TRTF Volume 1 games, including TRTF Classic, which was going to use the The Return to Freddy's: Chapter One animatronic models along with some other new assets. However, he ended up cancelling them since they would've took too much time, and he wasn't pleased with the community.
The Return to Freddy's: Chapter One is a cancelled reboot of the TRTF SAGA that was being led in development by Tyler Ahlström and his brother, Sean Ahlström. It entered development in around the middle of 2017 and it was first announced to the community on August 28th, 2017. It was intended to be released on a closed launcher called the "OMEGA LAUNCHER"[1] (which has seemingly since been cancelled) that was being made by a friend of Tyler's named Jacob Rotundo at the time[2].
The game was itself eventually cancelled in around the middle of 2018, when Tyler decided to completely remove all of the Five Nights at Freddy's characters and assets from the game, and to make the game it's own unique intellectual property (retitling the game to "THE ROAD THAT FALLS"). He largely restarted the development of the game around this time after this decision and the game, in essence, essentially became something completely unrelated to what it was originally intended to be.
The game's cancellation was first announced by Tyler to the community on July 9th, 2018 on the TRTF Saga and Co. Discord[3], where he announced that the game itself was apparently intended to be a set-up for a game that was never intended to be related to the The Return to Freddy's series or the Five Nights at Freddy's series at all, and the community had fallen for this. Accounts from many people who worked with Tyler at the time disprove this claim however.

Game Information
Almost no information about the gameplay is known, but it appeared to be some form of free-roam, as there were several locations shown that the player could've be in. An AC unit was mentioned in the text of one of the teasers, which moves around the building and can be adjusted. BFP said in the TRTF QnA Video that the game was to be nearly as big as Amnesia, hinting that the game would've been much larger than any of the previous TRTF Games.

Trivia
This game was intended to be first of an entirely new reboot saga. This game was intended to be followed up by reboots of TRTF 2, TRTF 3, TRTF 4, FRANKBURT'S, RADSLA as well an entirely new game called "TRTF: Chronicles" and reboots of TRTF 5 (although it was planned to be retitled to TRTF: The Final Chapter) and Mad Mind. [4]
Sigrid Rodriguez, the music composer for TRTF 2 thru TRTF5, would have returned to make music for the game.
This game was planned to be the first game in the TRTF Saga where the animatronics had voices, similar to Five Nights at Freddy's: Sister Location.
Despite Lockjaw being a reoccuring antagonist in the series as a whole, he supposedly wasn't present in the game as a whole, but as a little figurine of himself sitting in the new Office, meaning that he existed canonically in the Reboot Saga and that he most likely would've appeared in future games within the series.
As stated in the TRTF QnA Video, BFP expected the game to come out in March or April of 2018, before this was eventually pushed back to a later unknown unspecified date before it was cancelled.
Prior to the game's cancellation, the game had a trailer that was planned to come out on November 15, 2017. However, technical difficulties with Tyler's computer pushed this back to an unspecified date. The game's trailer was eventually announced to be coming out in sometime in March or April of 2018, however this date was eventually pushed even further back to an unspecified date yet again. Before the trailer could be finished, the game was cancelled however.
It is heavily theorized by a lot of fans that the game takes place in 1996, since BFP said "I will never forget the incident of 96" in the comments of a forum talking about the game.
