There is a very, very little known game for the NES of exceeding difficulty known as "Solstice." It was bought for me by my extremely Christian Uncle (curiously enough,) upholding a 3-Dimensional feel void in most NES games, a brief image search will reveal its unique appearance, contrast that with imagery from the first Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest. Witnessing this game is akin to dropping a few hits of acid, taking the aforementioned games and jamming them into an N64, as the life blood of these early NES RPG's trickles down into the system, bash the system with numerous books written in Old-English, both fiction and non, merging such with garbled NES dialog, until hazards reward one with a mangled fusion, giving life to this curious Frankenstein. (Which might just be the onset of your acid trip.) Faced now with this vertigo inducing abomination, the game looks brilliant in all its unique flavors with a soundtrack that is impervious toward adverse scrutiny.
The game's entrance into 3-D with its ironic contrast of 2-D sprites, adds all the more to the games vibrant visual lunacy. Its prose a curious disjointed web of erratic, at times beautifully rendered adages of coherent irrelevance scattered throughout a web of synaptic spasms of relevant incoherence.
Here the mingled words of what might be Shakespeare are filtered and translated through the most garbled NES RPG dialog, and from such a state thus translated backward, until such filtration leaves one which seems another contrast of irony.
Despite the varied lunacy that confounds abstraction, I find myself hindered not by the isolated instances of sanity, but at times by the game's control schematics, as the individual is granted full reign over the entire 3 Dimensional Axis, seemingly making one's desired trajectory a difficult element to master. This however is simply a minor quip.
As a balancing factor the nearly nonexistent threat of being defeated rectifies any potential damage taken while acclimating oneself to the control schematics, and so too, at times the nature of said controls can lead one to stumble across that otherwise impossible.
All in all, the unique semblance of visuals, music, so too the humor present within dialog that may be missed for one unfamiliar with TheCatamites brilliance.
This mix match of early NES garbled Shakespearean dadaism, schizophrenic soundtrack, vast expanses, in addition toward the ever present amount of health that, even when dropped far bellow its limit has no resultant consequence, gives me the impression that, even the difficult control schemes are part of a divine catastrophe unified in the vast expanse of this NES Acid Trip.
And therefore something to be experienced in all its totality.
All in all, it's more than worth the 5 bucks, so creep out of your man-cave, tip-toe upstairs and gank the 5 bills from your Mom's ivory tower.
Of course, augment the game with your drug(s) of choice.
My breakfast being Opiates and K-Pins leaves a desire for some psychedelia, but alas, the curiosity of my intoxication implies mandatory adherence toward my drug intoxication diet, I'd love to play this with a side of PCP but alas "My coat hast no pockets."
