[BugReport]: Game freezes just after "start" script is executed.

Your art style is absolutely wonderful, the pre-rendered backgrounds at slightly lower res, beautifully lit really capture the imagination. Thing like the texture on the roof of their house just look amazing with the sharp pixels. I'm not sure exactly how you get the effect but it works! The characters are also lovely, seem to fit the tone really well, although I found the portraits clashed a bit with the rest of it.

I wasn't following the story well enough I think, probably playing while a bit too tired, and was a bit confused at times about what the goal was sometimes, but just walking around exploring was so nice.

Had a bit of a Miyazaki feel almost, if he'd done an obscure PS2 adventure game :D

I tried to play this through WINE since there is no Linux build, but the game froze after the first scene and also had audio issues, so I will refrain from voting.
However the game looks great and it looks like you got an impressive amount of work done in the time available. Congratulations!

Love the aesthetic of the game, gives me real nostalgic feelings, a bit like the older Final Fantasy games mixing the hand-painted feeling backgrounds with the 3D characters.

Great job, backgrounds and aesthetics feels like paintings. With some sfx will feel more enjoyable. Loved the **video game developer is the worst job** (we all know is so hard to be a video game dev/we're all starving)

The central concept of Mon Village est Magique (abbreviated to MVEM) is that the real world is surrounded by multiple, invisible Magical Worlds. Seb and Tommy travel to some of these places. They are all connected to a mysterious location called the Infinite Ocean ...

The name of this new episode set in the MVEM series is 'The Whale of the Infinite Ocean' (that I will shorten to TWOTIO)

Project description:

  • Main characters:
    The 2 heros in most episodes of MVEM are Seb (8 years old kid) and his little brother Tommy (5 years old), normal kids who love to play in the countryside around their house, and who discover the existence of Magical Worlds. There are many other characters in the MVEM series. In TWOTIO we can find some of them such as Mumuton (a magical dust bunny), Mom and Dad (the parents of Seb and Tommy), and there will be several NPCs (Not Playable Characters) to whom we can talk and interact with.

  • World:
    The story of MVEM takes place in the 1990s, so the world was a little different from now (computers were rare, people didn't have cell phones, kids used to play old-school video games, the cars had different designs, etc).
    There are 2 distinct worlds in MVEM:TWOTIO. The real world (the world where Seb and Tommy live), and one of the many Magical Worlds.
    ¤ The real world will be located in the village of Seb and Tommy in France, in the Burgundy of the 1990s, as I remember it from my childhood memories. It will take place around the kids' house, near the ruins of a Medium Ages castle which has now disapeared.
    ¤ There are several Magical Worlds to visit by travelling through many different 'Wells' spread in the Infinite Ocean (you can see these wells as magical doors). In TWOTIO, the Magical World - inspired by fantasy, wizardry, etc. - is a small kingdom that the king wants to expand to show his power.

  • Story:
    Mumuton the dust bunny has disappeared! Seb and Tommy investigate to find their friend. The tracks lead them near a Well of Magical Water at the pond of their village. Suddenly this unique kind of Water reacts: a breach opens between their world and another world. Mumuton jumps out of the breach, holding proudly an invitation written by a king they had never met before! Seb and Tommy are invited to a great spectacle to celebrate their meeting with these new people: the two kids are indeed officially named ambassadors. In the kingdom, the spectacle is amazing, with lots of colors and music, and a giant whale flies through the sky to end the show breathtakingly. The king is very proud of the work of his loyal subjects. Everything is going well, the kingdom looks peaceful and prosperous... until the giant Whale decided to escape into the real world! The heros then learn that it is a rare animal that normally lives inside the Infinite Ocean and shouldn't be held captive, as it is under the protection of the Goddess of the Infinite Ocean, Sequana. The people of the Kingdom had tamed the Whale to entertain the king. But it's so large and heavy that it could do some damage in the real world! It's not supposed to be there, after all. For both the sake of their world and of the Whale, the heros gonna have to send it home and free it from the king! But this very one doesn't seem to want to cooperate anymore... Is a war about to begin?

  • Gameplay:
    MVEM:TWOTIO is a point and click adventure game in 3rd person view. The player will go through the story and will have to solve a few puzzles. It is intended to be played by young people, so the game will be quite easy and will more focus on the quest, narration and world immersion.

  • Engine:
    This project is developed with Visionaire Studio.

  • Graphics:
    3D characters, evolving in 2D environments (pre-rendered 3D).
    The graphics will be created in 3dsmax and After Effects.
    I would like to keep an old-school aspect wih pixels like in games such as FF7, Grim Fandango, The Longest Journey, etc.

  • Music:
    The music of the game is composed by @Yazorius

Still working on more scenes to visit. That's a huge work to create a whole world on your own! Even a small village for the beginning of the game...

Short list of characters in MVEM: The Whale of the Infinite Ocean (the ones I have created so far). I still have many more to create! These ones are the family and neighbour of the kids. I will add villagers and also characters from the Magical World.

This is how the game currently looks like. I had a hard time fighting with the dialogue system. Everything seems to be working now, so I have to create more scenes, etc. Still a long road to go! But I'm making good progress, I hope you like it!

Working on other backgrounds for the game. I keep them very simple, as I have a lot of them to create... I don't know what will be done at the end of the Jam because I have many unsolved issues in the game engine.

Here's an artwork with the heros in front of their village. These 2 characters were illustrated by my brother Yves for a Visual Novel made last year (MVEM: The Forgotten Crypt). BTW, don't miss the game of Yves for #advjam2019, it's called Romanesco!

And finally this is the first official preview of a in-game scene with the characters! I hope you like it. This is what the game should look like in the end. Now I have to do more scenes, more characters, etc. And write texts!

I have imported the final version of the house in Visionaire Studio engine. And I am placing the characters! Soon I hope to show you the result :)

The scene of the house of Seb and Tommy is almost finished. I'll be posting the final render tonight or tomorrow morning if I can import it with the characters in the game engine successfully. Stay tuned!
