The controls are super hard to get used to, my fingers feel like they're trying to be everywhere.
Also, I never felt the need to use punches. This game is about combos but the gun just kills everything and has crazy range. Maybe the game doesn't need a gun?
Hey there Skazdal! I recently took the time to download, play and enjoy the progress of Super Challenger. I had a good time beating the crap out of those dinosaurs and the game reminded me sort of a Battletoads and double dragon mix. Plus having the main character take on dinosaurs with his fist is pretty BADASS.
I also like the platforming elements, but would like to see a little more on the platforming in the future. I really did like the different ways to attack the enemies and would love to see how you expand on that in the future. Maybe, adding other grab moves and other ways to attack the enemies would be great as well (Powerups maybe?)
Even with the lack of animations, it has so far, the basic foundation you did so far is well done.
I recently covered your favorite as one of my favorite indie gamejolt games of the week!
Check out my video if you're interested in hearing my thoughts!
Have an awesome day!
wow looks amazing! will check it out!
Welcome adventurers!
SUPER Challenger put you in the boots of the Professor Challenger, the main character of the Lost World novel, by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
Be the professor Challenger and impose your will to the Lost World with your fists and your gun. Be reckless, fearless, unstoppable and cast doom on the newly discovered specie of dinosaur, the Challengeraptor.
This is the first prototype of a 2D platformer mixed with beat 'em up mechanics, set in the mythic plateau where dinosaurs are not fossils, but real animals of flesh and skin... and teeth and claws. The prototype focuses on the core gameplay mechanics of the game: run, jump, and brawler mechanics associated to a combo system. The point is to put this system to the test, gather feedbacks and decide of the future of the project based on those critics.
As a prototype, it lacks every bit of polish a real game should have: no sound, no animations, no fancy particles and flashings sprites, screenshake, etc. It is expected to be judged on it's basic mechanics, nothing else. There's not a wide variety of enemies, guns, landscapes and hats to collect: this is as minimal as possible.
This warning out of the way, let's talk a little about the game mechanics themselves!
Run and Jump: you played Super Mario? You know what to expect. Classic stuff.
Punches, uppercuts, elbow drops, grappling and gunshots: this is getting a bit more complex. The Character has several possibilities to transfer energy into it's targets, and not only by smashing it's massive fists in their faces.
The game tracks the score of the current level, and the score is increased by killing raptors. The catch is, the higher the combo is, the more the score increases. The best way to increase the combo before landing lethal hits is to vary the attacks of the character. Attacks suffer from a diminishing return, so spamming one hit is highly inefficient. I won't talk too much about it here, it is explained in game.
The game also offers bonus points for badass moves. .gif of these moves are scattered around the presentation.
The whole point is to encourage the player to play as aggressively and as badassely as possible, to mimic the egocentric, impulsive and violent nature of the character.
Inputs are explained in-game. It's meant to be played with a gamepad, but keyboard is supported. It's configured to be played with a QWERTY keyboard, but by pressing P on the keyboard, you can switch it to AZERTY.
If you try it out, I'd be immensely thankful for every bit of feedback, be it positive or negative, don't hesitate to point toward what works and even more to what doesn't. Be honest, no problems if you think it's crap, just tell me why.
And if you make an awesome score in the final level, come on and brag about it! that's what Challenger would do ;)
Oh, one last thing: if you have already done the tutorial section and just want to go back to the final level to make a better score, go left in the first level, you'll go there directly ;)
