IMPORTANT!

This mod is developed off SUPER MARIO WAR, a fanmade Super Mario 4-player deathmatch game developed by Florian Hufsky and Michael Schaffer (Two52) of 72dpiarmy. The current version of Super Cat Wars is based on SUPER MARIO WAR 2.0, a fork of the game developed by mmatyas (Fluffypillow). For more information about Super Mario War, please see the next section below.

The mod is also based on SUPER CAT TALES, a mobile indie game series developed by Gionathan Pesaresi (NEUTRONIZED). The mod is NON-PROFIT, which means that I (or any other team members involved) do not make any money off it. The mod's GameJolt page does not support ads for the same reason. If you want to support Neutronized, buy Drop Wizard or buy SCT2 Premium (which removes ads and reduces item prices)

Please note that future content added to the mod may contain spoilers for Super Cat Tales 2, and even upcoming games like Super Cat Tales: PAWS. This may apply to other non-Neutronized media due to the presence of crossover content. We may issue spoiler warnings, if applicable, on Discord server posts and video content featuring upcoming updates to SCW.

Super Cat Wars is a full-fledged Super Mario War mod developed by EleCyon that aims to transform the entirety of the game into the theme and artstyle of Super Cat Tales by Neutronized. If you don't know what Super Mario War is, it is a 4-player deathmatch battle game where players can defeat each other by stomping on their heads or using powerups and projectiles.

Super Cat Wars is so far the biggest Super Mario War mod project in the making, and is one of the many passion projects I'm making. The primary goal of this mod is to make it the revival point of Super Mario War by bringing back the original community from inactivity while introducing the game to a new audience - the Super Cat Tales/Neutronized community, and giving it a fresh new coat of paint with new tilesets, skins, maps, worlds, and so much more.

As of 2023, the mod is still in development, with new updates and features being added to the base game.

ASSETS

  • Redesigned all graphics to fit the Super Cat Tales theme. This includes powerups, menu interfaces, mode objects, enemies, and more.

  • Added colorblind-friendly assets - team logos (paw, cat, bell, and fish) and shapes are applied to things like owned bubbles, Domination panels, switch blocks, world keys, and more! There's also a Colorblind Mode to turn on to add more colorblind options to various assets in the game like blocks.

  • Added 270+ new skins, including the SCT cast, Neutronized game skins, new costumes, team alts, and crossover skins!

  • Added a new player palette adjusted to Super Cat Tales' Pico-8 expanded palette!

  • Added new community skins and backgrounds made by our fellow contributors.

  • Added the ability to change main menu colors, as well as interfaces for in-game UI and more!

  • Crossovers! They've come from different dimensions and different worlds to challenge you - can you recognize them all?

  • HTML documentation for Super Mario War is now replaced with new Word documents featuring documentation for base game, level & world editors, and credits. To preserve legacy & compatibility, this documentation will also feature screenshots from both SCW and SMWar.

MAPS, WORLDS, & EDITORS

  • Added 250+ new backgrounds from familiar SCT locations and Neutronized games, with some featuring day/afternoon/night custom alts.

  • Added 60+ new tilesets, featuring lots of new assets from the Super Cat Tales games, Drop Wizard, Slime Pizza, Slime Labs, Mineblast!!, and so much more!

  • Added lots of alternate palettes and expansions for various tilesets, including lineart, ground tiles, and even Warp Pipes!

  • Added crossover tilesets, including some from the Dadish and Super Fowlst games and a slightly-refurbished Super Mario War Classic tileset. There's a couple of references to spot as well, if you dare.

  • Added the ability to place background NPCs (no dialogue), as well as text! These are available as tilesets.

  • Added lots of new maps, including a few designed by the community

  • Added STORY MODE - see more in the Story Mode section.

  • Added two new worlds - a remake of SCT2's World 1 and a new map compilation named "Littleland"!

  • Added 3 new tours for Tour Mode

AUDIO

  • Added 5 new music packs based on the Super Cat Tales and Neutronized games, as well as additional music from Thomas K. Young's games as well as Raku's "Jack the Ripper"

  • Added new music composed by Wowymolly, DonnieTheGuy, RazeZX, and EleCyon (me) for the SCW Story Mode!

  • Some maps now have special music assigned to them, especially crossover maps. Can you recognize some of the familiar tracks?

  • Added new sounds from Super Cat Tales 1 and 2, as well as other Neutronized games!

  • Added toggleable announcer, with the ability to turn off combo sounds or completely disable announcer sounds entirely.

QUALITY OF LIFE

The mod is based on Super Mario War 2.0, currently being developed by mmatyas. It adds the following features to make things more quality-of-life:

  • Added new options for some gamemodes, as well as extra options to toggle such as secret orbs (especially for accessibility).

  • All bugs that were present in SMWar 1.8 Beta 2 are now fixed, including the infamous World Boss bug and some score-related bugs with Shy Guy Tag/Robo Tag.

  • Added support for a wider range of custom music formats thanks to SDL Mixer X, a fork of SDL Mixer by Wohlstand. Such is demonstrated with the use of custom SPCs from SMWCentral in special crossover maps!

  • [Update 2.0] Expanded tileset size limits to add more graphics and tiles on a single (static) tileset.

CONTENT UPDATES

  • Future updates are planned for the mod as well, featuring more maps, skins, tilesets, music, and more!

  • Update snapshots may be released to allow users to get a sneakpeek of what's coming, as well as report any bugs or errors.

Super Cat Wars features a new Story Mode, playable from World Mode, where it features a familiar face taking centerstage as the antagonist while bringing in original music, new locations, and brand new boss battles!

As the Neutronized Battle Royale Tournament comes to a close, the contestants set their eyes on the grand prize - the Golden Paw Trophy. But the grand finals are interrupted when a corrupted warrior - Dark Kallio - intervenes from above, and steals the trophy! It seems that a piece of Dark Matter lingers in him from a past adventure, and this evil soldier is hellbent on reviving Dark Matter and taking over Neko Land once again. It's up to you and your fellow contestants to stop him, save Neko Land, and take back the Golden Paw Trophy!

THE KARDION LEAGUE

As the players progress throughout the game, they'll meet a group of cronies led by Dark Kallio - the Kardion League. Some are existing antagonists and protagonists, but some are also brand new. From left to right: Sheriff Shred, Major Peck, Dark Kallio, Rigs, Swashbuckler Baburu, and Stargazer Leonne. Some may give players deathmatches, or fight all players directly to hinder progress.

PARTY EDITION

In Update 2.0, a free-for-all version of Story Mode known as "Story Mode: Party Edition" is also available for play. This allows the players to jump to any part of the world without having to complete the previous ones beforehand. This was created due to concerns regarding the lack of a savefile system for World matches, often times requiring the players to complete the entire world in one power session.

Additional features include a new music track for the world map, a complete inventory featuring handy world items, and the ability to end the adventure early by completing the ending level or defeating the final boss.

Disclaimer: Please do not expect too much from Story Mode. This one still follows SMWar's limitations and will not include additional coding and game modes.

SUPER MARIO WAR (abbreviated as SMW or SMWar) is a non-profit open-source 4-player deathmatch battle game based on the Super Mario series by Nintendo, featuring various gamemodes, powerups, customization capabilities, and level and world editors. The game was developed by Florian Hufsky & Michael Schaffer (Two52) of 72dpiarmy, and has various assets like maps, skins, and tilesets contributed by several contributors from the 72dpiarmy community.

The game was originally developed since 2004 as an open-source rewrite of the MS-DOS game "Mario War" by Samuele Poletto, and has since received several builds until 2009.

On December 16, 2009, Florian Hufsky passed away, and development on Super Mario War has halted at version 1.8, Beta 2, alongside with the 72dpiarmy community falling into inactivity. Several attempts were made at reviving the game's development, such as Super Mario War: Stomp Arena by Eon8ight and Big JM, but none of them succeeded.

In 2014, mmatyas (Fluffypillow) started work on a fork of Super Mario War, known as Super Mario War 2.0. This fork of the game features bug fixes, partially-working netplay, toggleable secrets, in-game screenshot features, and more. In 2019, EleCyon would rediscover this game again, and create a huge effort to revive the game's popularity by transforming it into a mod based on the indie game series "Super Cat Tales" by Neutronized. This mod would be called "Super Cat Wars".
