Hi! So a lot’s been happening.
First of all, you might have noticed that I added a story section to the game’s description here. If you didn’t notice, well, there ya go.
Second, I got another musician on board to help with the OST. My friend KattyWampus gave me a bunch of music tracks for the OST that she made for some unfinished vaporware projects, and those are about half the OST. Katty’s far too busy with other projects, so she’s pretty limited on time for making entirely new tracks. Thankfully, I know a guy to pick up the slack and do the other half - James Nick Gray. He did the music for the original creator of Bubsy (Michael Berlyn)’s latest game Ogg. He’s also his nephew. Who knew! One degree of separation from the original Bubsy games, baby!
Lastly, and probably most importantly, I’m making the switch over to Game Maker Studio Pro 1.4 (which I got on humble bundle for super cheep a while ago). I felt the game was too clunky in RPG Maker and didn’t feel enough like Super Mario RPG. Not to mention it would be incredibly difficult to implement Wario Ware style minigames, which is another feature planned for particular aspects of the game. As I was working on implementing more things for Bubsy to do on the Overworld (jump, run, crawl, smile, etc), it became all the more clear RPG Maker could in theory work, but it just wouldn’t turn out good as a game in general. It would be good for something made with RPG Maker, but that’d be it. This means I’ll have to start from square 1 again, but to be frank I wasn’t that far along with the RPG Maker version anyway. I stopped myself before I got too far.
So now I’m diving into tutorials on how to use Game Maker. I think I already have a pretty solid grasp on the basics, so I should be able to get back to where I was in a few months. That is, of course, with better everything thanks to the lack of limitations on what I can do.
I have a few changes I may or may not make to how the game will be, one of those things is bigger more expressive graphics. I might even be able to make the gameplay closer to Mario RPG than I planned on in RPG Maker.
But can I do it? Time will tell.
Wish me luck.
(and if it all goes to hell I can always fall back on my RPG Maker build and settle for being “RPG Maker good”)
