a retrospective on the fnaw series and why it's awesome part1

Hello, fellow FNaF no-lifers, and welcome! FINALLY to another review! Man, it sure has been a while since the last review.

I bet at least one person thought this was gonna be an April Fool's joke.

So yeah, finally another review! I know lots of people thought this review was gonna be on Cabin Fever 2, but I want to finish talking about the official Fnaw games first and then talk about its fangames.

Without further ado, let's take a visit to Wario's Fast Food Factory!

"Chapter 1 Development"

As many of you know, Fnaw was made by Wwwwario, who I'll just refer to as Andy from now on.

Years ago, Andy watched a video by Markiplier - a YouTuber he used to watch from time to time.

The video in question being Markiplier's first-ever FNAF video.

While watching, Andy noticed several familiar elements, stuff like fading transitions.

So, Andy got the idea that FNAF was made in the exact same engine he used to create games, Clickteam Fusion.

Before Fnaw, Andy was most famous for making several 2D platformers, starting with Wario.

But when FNAF came out, he started to use the engine to do new things with it, to see if he could make something similar to it.

And he ended up turning it into a full game just for fun and tests, and the rest is history.

The first Fnaw game came out in January 2015, and would have 4 more sequels until 2016.

There were plans for a remastered version of the first game made by the 64th gamer, but this remake was cancelled, honestly for the better.

The most infamous things about it were weird eyed Mario and puppet Luigi.

luigiteaser.webp

After that, Fnaw just became another obscure, forgotten fan-games series, like Stuffed or Fazbear's Return.

But in May 2020, it was announced that all Fnaw games would be getting 2.0 updates that would add extra content and make the games better.

And on May 17th 2020, Fnaw 1 2.0 was officially released, and we are going to talk about it.

"chapter 2 welcome to warios"

Ladies and gentlemen, the time has come again! It's menu time!

untitled.png

And it's…fine, I guess? This probably blew someone's mind back in 2015.

I guess the art in the background is nice, but MAN, the music that plays on the menu is one of the most painful things humanity had the displeasure of hearing.

We also have achievements in this game, but I'll get to those later.

Anyway, time to hit New Game!

When we hit New Game, it shows us this black and white render of Wario and Waluigi in some hallway.

untitled.png

The red text appears, telling a story:

"There once was a man named Wario, who along side his friends worked at his very own fast-food factory. One day, Wario and his friends went missing and were never seen again. The factory was also closed a few years later. The government reopened the factory, and one man has gotten the job as a night guard there."

Fun fact: The black and white render is from Mario Power Tennis's opening cutscene.

untitled.png

anyway office time :D

untitled.png

Man, this sure does bring back nostalgia, doesn't it?

Oh, and literally everything in the game beside the characters is from Google images.

Some might call it lazy cough cough ls Mark cough cough, but most people will find this extremely charming.

Here's the original image for the office, because why not?

fnaw_office.webp

We have a door and a window on our sides - both which can be lit up and closed - and also a funny camera system.

freezingroomempty.webp

In this game, we play as legendary Richard McRoy, a bald man who is so cool.

1000.png

We get a phone call by this game's phone guy, James Peterson.

latest.png

(for some fucking reason his actual design wasn't in the wiki so yeah have this instead thanks heisen)

He welcomes us to Wario's Fast Food Factory, our new summer job.

He talks about the rumors about the factory but James tells us to just not think about them and that they're probably just hoaxes.

The phone call ends, and a scary growl is heard. Wow, so spooky! Let's check the camera…

Oh no! A skinny guy and a mukbang YouTuber with white eyes are trying to kill me! What do I do???

entrance_1_with_waluigi_and_wario.webp

Well, don't worry, I'll tell ya!

On night 1, TWO possessed reanimated corpses are active - those obviously being Wario and Waluigi.

waluigi_fnaw1.webp
wario_fnaw1.webp

So, what do they do? Well, they just sorta go into a bunch of random rooms. They can go back, go into another worthless room, and such.

cam5waluigi.webp
cam1wario.webp
cam2_rare_wario.webp

( ignore the fact wario has two rows of teeth in his mouth just don't)

When ever they feel like it, they'll appear at your left door, and you gotta close it if you wanna keep your kidneys.

waluigihallwaynew.webp
wariohallwaynew.webp

I might as well share all my opinions as of now:

The gameplay isn't really great, in fact, it's kinda bad.
The characters all sorta wonder a bit as a bunch of idiots and appear at your door whenever the AI feels like it.

Another thing I really don't like is the way the power works. The game has 200 power, but it's basically the same amount as Five Nights at Freddy's 1's power - using the cams or doors will add one meter of power, while using the lights will instantly take away 2% of power.

The reason for this is that in the older version, the lights were too OP, and you'd never have to use the cams. But in later versions, the lights were buffed so that it'll always take away 2% of power, so that it'll force you to use the cams.

Except the cams are also kinda broken because this is an early 2015 fan-game - there's a lot of jank and some good old charm, mostly jank though.

In some rooms, only one character can be in it - for example, in the camera closest to your left door, only one nerd can be in it - either Garlic Man or Skinny Luigi.

Because of this, you'll panic a lot and it caused you to check the lights more than you should. So yes, that's about it - night 2 time!

James calls us - he congratulates us for being a good boi and talks more about the factory. Apparently, 6 years ago, one year after the factory shut down, a woman passing by the factory saw Wario behind the windows looking all scary. The same thing happened to a man last year, but James thinks, since only 2 people saw him, they're probably just smoking mushrooms, and he ends the call.

On night 2, Weegee is alive!

luigi_fnaw1.webp

(insert minecraft villager joke here)

Luigi is depressed -- how sad! Just look at this sad, little man!

cam9_luigi.webp

He's so sad that he's inside an old, 2015 fan-game that got updated a lot but none of the updates made the game good! Our boi, Loogi, is a door character - look at him screaming at Richard McRoy for making him like this. So sad...

luigiwindow.webp

(jesus what the hell is up with his eyes)

Anyway, night 3 time!

James calls us again for some more spicy epic lore. He says on Monday, 7 years ago, Wario and Waluigi went to the factory and they never came back, so Mario and Luigi went to look for them, only for them to never come back either. Then Peach went to look for Mario and she never came back either, so people were convinced the place was haunted. So, they shut it down.

Some witnesses said that around morning, someone else went to the factory and he never came back either.

James mentions how the factory had a Wario Man suit. The costume also went missing the exact same day as the incidents. James ends the phone call by saying how one of the machines in the factory shut down, but the only ones that could even shut it down are the employees, and we obviously didn't do it - I wonder...

In night 3, everybody's favorite damsel in distress comes to life - Peach!

peach_fnaw1.webp

she's, you guessed it, another door nerd.

i won’t mind this too much because this was one of the first FNAF fan-games ever made,

control_room_with_peach.webp

When you notice she's no longer in your cameras, just close the door, just like you would with everyone else.

peachdoor.webp

Something else to mention is that the nerds can stay at your doors for a pretty long time, so yeah, gotta conserve that power.

Anyway, night 4 time! We get another call by our good pal, James. He tells us after this shift, we can take the rest of the week off, because the factory is closed. The machines are broken, the systems are glitching out, and one of the employees found 2 teeth in the basement.

James then decides to talk about Wario's epic super secret recipe and how Wario and Waluigi used to own a little café before they opened up the factory. James also mentions how the factory has 2 entrances, and how it's basically impossible for any intruders to get inside it.

Before ending the call, James asks us if we have heard any voices during our shift, cause he heard someone say "Help me!" or "Stop him," blah blah blah, and according to him, the voice sounded like Weegee.

On night 4, the man, the legend himself, Mario becomes active!

mario_fnaw1.webp

He has a new mechanic!

So, what does he do?

Alright, so he's in your PC and he'll slowly come out of it. When he does, pull up your cams.

mario_in_office.webp

Oh, and he also gives you like 2 whole seconds to pull up the monitor.

Basically, Mario is a non-existent threat. Just forget he even exists.

8l5yvw.jpg

Night 5 time! Oh boy!

James calls us and turns out Richard’s IQ is less than a goldfish, and he decided to come work at the possessed, scary factory. James decides to be useful for once and decides to come over and free us from the evil factory. OH NO!

He fucking dies. Wow. So sad.

Anyway, night 5 is just the same thing with faster AI. I, uh, might as well talk about some Easter eggs.

Ehem.

There’s a chance that this white-face thing shows up at your door.

untitled.png

This goofy goober is called Emma - they're very mysterious as of now. It's unknown what Emma is or what their connection is to the lore, but hey, they exist.

I know everyone pretty much knows this, but Emma is from the GameBoy Add-on - the GameBoy Camera.

untitled.jpg

It was an actual camera you could put on your Gameboy and take crusty pictures with it.

There was a run option in the console. If you kept pressing it over and over again, it would show you a spoopy ass image.

mbvunizuarhrgffw6f4b.webp

I'm getting off topic. Back to FNAW!

The other major Easter Egg is this.

103.webp

Look, it's Wario Man! I guess he spent 7 years of his life shitting in a toilet.

When you beat night 5, it shows an image outside the factory with some text.

night5endbgfnaw1.webp
night5textendfnaw1.webp

Because Richard is so stupid, he decides to go to the factory for a sixth and final shift. Cause of course, why wouldn't he?

Night 6 time, babyyyy! We have no phone call because James is dead, and no one new is active.

So, I might as well talk about the exploit. Whenever your power reaches 190, close both doors, aaaaaaaaannd...

Congrats! You did it! You beat the night. I'm not even joking; by doing this, you'll always have more than enough power.

By beating night 6, you get this beautiful image. Wow!

6th_night_ending.webp

Ok, last thing before review ends -- custom night.

By beating 5/20, you get some secret lore; read it if you want, idk...

dontletherknow.webp
shewillfindout.webp
ifyoudontstaycalm.webp
youcantletemmaknowaboutthis.webp

Man, if only there was an almost 4-hour-long video explaining all the lore with some epic fucking music and visuals to go with it. Too bad no such video exists. Let’s just end the review here.

______________________________________________________

Overall, FNAW 1 is an extremely flawed game. The AI is weird, the characters stay at doors for longer than they should, and the cams are insanely broken, even though there's no original mechanic beside Mario, and everyone acts the same way.

Despite all of this, the game has so much charm, from the iconic designs of Wario and the gang, especially Mario. The goofy-ass sounds that play whenever they feel like it, the Google images, and the bad phone calls.

This game really hasn't aged well, but it was the foundation of what was about to come. If this game never came out, Cabin Fever 2 wouldn't exist, and Bruno Locktrap would also never be made, and most importantly, we would never get FNAW Lost In Time.

Despite all of its flaws, the game still deserves a 4.5 out of 10.

Thank you for reading, and I'll see you all in the next review!
