Hey it's me, Evalyn!
It's been a while since we last spoke.. Almost eight months to be exact! The innerworkings of the studio have changed quite a bit in the last few weeks. This includes our scope and genre for the game. We've decided that creating a large-scale RPG just isn't possible for us currently, so we've cut the scope in half. We're now making a survival horror with RPG elements set in the Altered World.
This new take on the world will still be very similar to the one you've come to know, and the game will still be heavily story based, though more aligned with something like Silent Hill or Resident Evil.
This new direction has also come with its own difficult caveats. The worst of which is essentially remaking the entire concept to fit a survival horror genre-switch. The game will now be a lot more linear, telling the story of each Alternate through the chapters. And while linear, it'll still feature a lot of exploration focused content. And remember.. Stay inside once dawn hits. The night isn't so friendly in this altered world we've come to know.
We'd also like to welcome the newest member of our team, Soy! She'll be helping us design our new characters and art direction going forward. Working diligently together with myself and my lead concept artist.

Here, we'd like to quickly show you our current progress on Maura's redesign, courtesy of our Lead Concept Artist, Fate!
He was kind enough to redesign her free of charge as he felt his artistry skills have improved over time since we last had concept art designed of our lead cast member.
..That reminds me!
We've been working on a large lore-bible for the entirety of the game's cast, locations, and story beats. This new bible will allow our internal team members to reference any bit of Altered Reality whenever they need it. Our first goal is to get every bit of each main cast member written down in this bible before we start anything else.
Having the story written down on paper will definitely improve morale both for myself, and the rest of the team. We've faced issues in the past because I originally believed that we could do work without a lore-bible or any sort of dedicated space for the entire storyline. This was obviously proven wrong. Moving forward with a newfound hope we've decided that this project will be indefinitely in development and no sort of release year or date will be released until we have at least one chapter of content ready to ship.
The game is expected to be 10+ hours long with each chapter coming to about ~2 hours of content depending on player experience, speed, and whether they skip dialogue or not. We're hoping you all will experience the story as you go though, and take it all in an hour or so at a time. I'd actually recommend taking breaks in-between chapters once the entire game is released to enjoy the story and really digest everything you've played through.
What else are we up to?
Ian and I have been slowly working on a smaller untitled project. It's inspired by liminal space content you'd see on TikTok or Instagram - you play as a currently unknown character through a story-driven text and image based surreal experience.
The visuals will include actual photos of real locations, no matter how edited they are. Here's a sneak-peek at some of those photos. (They're all unedited, and not implemented.)

Anyways.. We'd like to thank you as usual for stopping by to read about our progress within the ButterflyCube Studios development on their games and related projects.
Have a good night!
