Hi everyone!
It's been quite a long time since we gave any insight on Chef Wanted's development, so we wanted to take this time to explain what's been going on, and how Chef Wanted is doing.
We first set out to create this game almost a year ago, in late 2018 for a Game Jam on Reddit. Incredibly, the initial scope of the game's development was that it would be possible to finish in under two months!
So what happened? For one, we discovered that the game we were making had the potential to be something much better than what we initially envisioned. More story elements were planned, as well as more mechanics and overall content. These being things we knew we had the skills to deliver.
However, as the development took more space on our calendar, it inevitably collided a few times with other things. Emil has a message to clarify how things were affected on his side:
"I, for one, had the brilliant idea of remaking the first FNAC game, something which actually followed sort of a similar route as Chef Wanted. At first the scope seemed reasonable, but it later turned out that things needed to change, and more ideas were added. All necessary to make the game what it became; to actually make it good.
The biggest reasons for any setbacks and delays on the game's development have definitely been from IRL stuff. Again, this was probably mostly on my part... I went through my final (and toughest) semester at school before graduating and moving on to university, which has left less time to develop the game. Though, the development never dwindled so far down that we were considering cancellation. We remained pretty darn close to the end - finishing the game, even with a few late minor additions and changes. This is also why we at least felt that we could afford to chill and give our lives some needed time as well (which is very important too, obviously).
Lately though, we’ve gotten a lot more content finished, and the game grows closer to being complete. A lot of sprites have been finished, code has been written, complex mathematical formulas have been discovered and tamed... everything is continuing to take shape! We are, of course, trying our best to get the game done as fast as possible, but that doesn’t mean that we're rushing the game so it comes out quicker. It's important to note that this game is going to be a very different FNAF fangame experience than most, and it’s a project we’re still VERY passionate about."
Emil's last message there is very true, and important to state again. All three of us are still excited about the game's development and seeing things get done is super satisfying.
Though Sian and I are mostly finished with our tasks, we are still doing what we can to help the game's development. For example, the OST has increased further to a total of 30 songs (24 main tracks, 6 bonus tracks), so for those of you who enjoy the music we've shown off so far, there is lots more in the game!
Sian has actually recently found a job (a real life one!) that she really likes, here in the UK with me. We actually work at the exact same office complex, which is awesome. She has also been busy with some of her own creative work, like this incredible Springtrap sculpture! While working on Chef Wanted, Sian has been the primary beta-tester for the game, looking for bugs and analysing the difficulty of enemies (for those of you who don't know, Sian also did a lot of sprites and design work earlier on in development!)
Basically... don't worry! Chef Wanted is still in the works and we're loving it. The team did slow down a bit a few months ago, but it's getting back on track. We don't want to show off too much now, as we're treating everything in the game as very important and potentially spoilery. So for now, all you're going to get is a new song (it's up on the GJ page now, called "The Pizzeria") and this:

Thanks for reading!
