Attack on Titan VR August To September Devlog

Hey everyone, our current artist and designer who created the June and July devlogs was away so this devlog will be written instead of recorded on video.

In this devlog I will go through the progress made during the months of August and September. We will also be releasing a new Trello roadmap which will feature everything for Update 1 and our current progress.

Map

Starting off with what we worked on the most between August and September, is our map of the Forest of Giant Trees. This map has an area of 6.25 kilometers squared and has around 2,000 giant trees ranging between heights of 70 to 90 meters tall. We also plan on going with a simple flat toon shaded style to go along with the character models.

We have also created some props to go along with our map such as wagons, bridges, bushes, rocks, etc. We plan to finalize their materials and place them onto the map at a later date.

Character

While it wasn't our main focus during these two months, we have also finished and rigged the models of 10 playable characters for this update: Eren, Armin, Jean, Connie, Levi, Mikasa, Sasha, Annie, Krista/Historia, and Petra. We also have fully modeled the ODM as well as the gas cans, blades, and flaregun. All the models for this update are basically complete with the exception of a few edits.

We plan to work on and finish the main player/character mechanics such as reloading, holstering, and changing sword grip in October and will be displaying our progress in a future devlog.

ODM

One of the first things we have worked on and completed between June and July is our ODM system and we have implemented new mechanics to make it as accurate as possible to the original source material while remaining intuitive. We have also added additions to the movement system such as running and jumping as well as added mechanics such as rope physics, rope wrapping, and additional gas controls. We plan on providing a more detailed explanation of the mechanics in a future devlog.

RoadMap

We have created a roadmap of our plans and progress for this update on Trello. We plan to update it as we continue with development and will be using Trello as a roadmap for future updates. You can view the Trello board here: https://trello.com/b/Bd6rbBIH

Conclusion

I want to personally apologize for the radio silence and long wait for this update. There have been many ups and downs in development and I am sure many of you think that this project is dead or canceled. I have made many promises and features, most of which I can no longer guarantee and I apologize for this.

However, I will finish this game. Development currently consists of a team of volunteers and I no longer consider this game as a solo development, but team-based. Many of the things seen in these devlogs would not exist if I was still working alone and I am extremely grateful to the team.

Our main plan is to have 3-4 major updates, each focusing on one key feature. This update will be focusing on moving from what was a proof of concept, to an actual playable game with working mechanics and a pleasing art style. Our next major updates will either consist of titans, or multiplayer.

Overall, that's all for this devlog, and I will be seeing you all in October. If you have any questions or suggestions, feel free to join the AotVR discord server through the link in the game page description.
