Aviary Attorney

A game 170 years in the making

Do you ever stop and think to yourself “Oh, if only there was a game where I could be an animal-person attorney with art and music from the 1800’s…” Don’t answer because I know you do!

Thankfully there is Aviary Attorney which is all of those things I listed and more. Aviary Attorney is a game I’ve been following the development of for a while and I am very excited to see it on Kickstarter and Greenlight.

The art style is absolutely gorgeous and like nothing I have ever seen in a video game. The characters are actually art by J.J. Grandville and as they say in the Kickstarter

“nearly every part of the game is drawn from or inspired by the public domain. The backgrounds and items have been borrowed from a range of 19th century illustrated books. The music takes the form of transcriptions and adaptions of French romantic composers, most notably Camille Saint-Saëns. Even the font is over 100 years old! “

If the music in the trailer is any indicator of the rest of the soundtrack then it is also going to be killer. The story has already got me hooked too, set in Paris in 1848 it follows Jayjay Falcon, a defense lawyer, and his “lackey” Sparrowson as they get a case to help Caterline Demiaou who has been accused of murder.

Inspired by the Ace Attorney series the game uses a lot of the same mechanics. If you aren’t familiar with the series, players take on cases and try to uncover evidence before a trial where the player must prove their client’s innocence. However, Aviary Attorney has a few key differences that have really caught my interest. One is that after taking on a client you are able to explore landmarks around Paris. You only have a small amount of time before each trial though, so you will have to decide where to go and what to say to uncover the most evidence. The second mechanic that interests me is if you happen to lose a case, the story will go on “albeit, a little darker than before… “

Aviary Attorney looks amazing and it feels like a labor of love. A love letter to the genre, the era, and J.J. Grandville’s amazing art. It is so unique it would be a shame if the game didn’t get funded!

Well! What are you waiting for? Go back Aviary Attorney on Kickstarter. Then vote for it on Greenlight. Then follow the development blog. Then follow them on twitter. Go on, go!
