A Virtual Reality engineer is putting the finishing touches on his project, but before releasing it he dives back in one last time. In Zykov Eddy’s surreal, atmospheric, and amazing game Electric Highways this VR engineer is you. A mix of first-person exploration and a bit of puzzle solving, Electric Highways does not only pull you in, but it holds you tight until the very end.

Upon entering the VR you find yourself in a blue world with small lamps placed across the ground. This world is calming and feels a bit like a park. Later in this world you find some of the lamps huddled around another one that is lying down in a pool of blood.

This first world sets the feeling of the other nine. Places that feel slightly normal enough to keep your suspension of disbelief but just alien enough to make you feel that you do not belong here. A point in the blue level seems to drive this home when giant, red lamps appear out of no-where after solving part of a puzzle. It makes you feel like you are interfering with a world that doesn’t want you.

Each level is extremely unique and none stay past their welcome. What really adds to the uniqueness of each is the incredible sound track by Xitilon. Eddy describes the game as an interactive conceptual music album and it feels very true. The music makes each level less like a level in a video game and more like an alien world. Even the park feels as if it is a place completely new.

The main goal in each level is to find a red symbol and open the door to the next level. How exactly you do this changes from level to level. Completing a level will raise more questions than it will answer. The game does not even try to answer them which leads to the feeling that you are an intruder here.

Electric Highways is an incredible experience. It’s a game about loneliness and feeling like you do not belong and it does such a perfect job of enforcing this feeling through its atmosphere and music. It is a game that needs to be experienced.
