The Game Boy Jam is probably my favorite game jam. I’ve participated in three out of the four so far and I’ve had a lot of fun each time. To give back here is my favorite five from #gbjam4!
Sunrise/Moonrise is a fun and addictive puzzle game. It took me a bit of work to understand exactly how to play but when I got the hang of it I felt the lightbulb pop up over my head and it all just clicked. I really would like to see it updated with more levels and mechanics.
Kick ass and take names in Shooting Star. Inspired a bit by Subspace Emissary from Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Shooting Star puts you in the role of Joules and you get to punch space dinosaurs. It’s a lot of fun but also hard and takes a bit of work to understand. Once you have the controls down though, getting those combos feels so gosh darn good and also looks really badass!
Cuckoo Castle is a “mini-metroidvania” and feels very big for a jam game. Explore a castle trying to rescue all the kidnapped villagers. The game feels great to play and all the characters you can play as feel very unique! It has some amazing art as well, I love the design for the bug people.
I wasn’t expecting to play a first person dungeon crawler when I started playing #gbjam games but that is exactly what Legend of Basement is. Following your cat, Navi, you find a big hole in your basement. Adventure awaits inside that hole, its filled with monsters and mystery! LOB has a great turn-based battle system and just moving around feels good. The game has 10 endings, but I’ve only managed to get a few.
Trappy Mine is an arcadey platformer where you dig down into a, well… Trappy Mine! Filled with bombs and spikes but also tons of treasure, collect as much as you can before you die. The game is very addictive and the incentive of getting a higher score keeps me playing. Just. one. more. round…..!
Honorable Mentions
These games didn’t quite make the pick, but they’re still great!
A nice clam game about collecting little bugs.
A very charming visual novel game with great pixel art.
A fast-paced shoot’em up.
It was difficult to pick only 5 games out of the 184 that were submitted but these games are all super good. So go vote for them and go check out the rest of the great games made for GBJam4!
