Bubblegum Punk: Post Mortem

Alright, figured I’d write a post mortem, for the game now that the jams over. I had a lot of fun writing this game, even with all the bugs.

What went Right:

1: The physics. This was all writen in a day. Literally. Friday was spent bashing out the ground collision, slope detection, and basic movements. this isn’t the first Sonic inspired engine that I’ve written. My other project is also based off of one. So without porting any actually code, I wrote a striped down version of the same engine.

2: The challenge: I wanted the later levels to be a challege cause some of my earlier unfinished projects have shown to have the opposite problem. They where too easy. actually uping the difficulty added to the fun of the game, I think.

What went Wrong:

1: The art: I pride my self as an artist, the player characters attests to that, but with the deadline looming I found myself taking the path of least resistance on the tiles and backgound, and it shows. I had planned to take the art the from suburban fair, to an construction site, to the industrial/big brother headquarters with each area having a seperate boss, but having to fit this into the jam time. The entire areas seem barren with the only things in them being the level, and the tags.

2:the bugs: did I say I like the code? well I still had a few problems with it, some of which I doubt I’ll be able to fix very easily, as well as just little nuances of the engine like the rails not taking any input while your on them (save jump but even that’s a bit buggy). That’s intentional but after playing it again with the chance to be away from it for like two days. yeah. I can see the problem with it.

3: TIME MANAGEMENT….. that is all. the art was done in HALF A DAY.

a few known issues with the current build of the game:

  • player character glitches out on rails, causes to clip through floor. Intermintent issue, hard to duplicate. will look into it. (this happened to me after the jam was finished)

  • rails don’t take input. Intential but no longer wanted. Easy fix.

  • some tiles are missing. easy fix

  • Boss doesn’t pause when you press enter.

for those of you wondering, I do fully plan on uploading a bug fixed version of the game shortly, and possibly a revamped, complete version. Bubblegum Punk: DX, anyone?

We are under attack!

In the quest for accessibility, I'm adding Resurrection Shrines for players on the 'novice' end of the platforming spectrum.

In order to unlock the power of a Shrine, you must collect 3 'Souls' from your dead corpses! (the floating blue orbs)

a drawing I did because I was bored😪. But I love how it turned out.😊

Spaaaace~

These are background sprites I've created for a game I'm working on at school ^w^ Click on the post to see how the sprites connect. You won't regret it! (personally, I think it's pretty heheh)

Drawn in Piskel using my mouse. Whaddya think?

I mostly build 3D First Person Shooter game mechanics in Unity, and in this I'm just showing C4 mechanics I made for a little side project I am working on! :)
