• Monsters are mainly shadowy figures who linger outside people's houses. It's very dangerous to be out at night because of this.

• This world isn't apocalyptic at all, people got used to the monsters and just don't go out at night anymore.

The definition of "father" in this case means that he somehow fornicated with a monster one night [four times], and a few days later he gave birth to a small one. The first time it happened, he didn't know what to do, so he ended up traumatizing it and it now wants to kill him. The later three he took care of properly, so they occasionally come back to check on him and maybe bring him something.

He's also a very calm dude. He just rolls with the punches and does what he needs to survive.
