Devlog 01: It’s Only the Beginning...


Welcome to Undertale Unforgiven's First Devlog:

Hello, it's me, MagicNumber990. God, it's gonna feel great to actually be able to talk about all of this. I don't want to mention too much in the opening, since there's an "Extra Bits" section at the bottom of the article. Hope you enjoy reading, what's done, and what’s to come.

Game Structure/Release Structure:

I've have been extremely quiet about how the game is being setup. I've done this intentionally, but I'm ready to at least make some of it public.

The game's release structure is going to be the Demo, a Full Release, then the final addition of Hard Mode. The order of events (gameplay wise) for the demo is a total of two encounters: Flowey's Survival Enounter and Sans' First Phase. Since the game isn't just "spam fight as the funny bone man slides around and dunks on you," there will be two different endings resulting from Sans' first phase. This was shown in all three of the credits themes. I'd rather not say where each ending leads to in the game though. But, you will be given the option to FIGHT or SPARE Sans during phase 1 (the catalyst phase), triggering one of the endings.

The Intro Sequence is done (at least the programming, music, and writing portions). The clip attached is how it will look in the demo, but the frames will change. Those are old placeholders by @Stupiditydx . It was put together (both the track and programming) and recorded by @therealhrznyt .

Our three coders, @LuckyAzure , @therealhrznyt , and @kenpham1506 have been working hard one the game. There was never any real progress on the game for its programing side other than that really old menu setup post. This was due to the fact that Lucky was working on his own Godot Undertale Engine. It's done now, no idea when it'll be public. But Undertale Unforgiven is its debut/offical release title as a way to showcase its capabilities.

Most of the public tracks released are kinda old now. I plan on eventually having most of them redone, but not for a while. Maybe for the full release. But, there are currently three tracks left to release (Not counting the one track that needs to be remade). The Intro Theme, Flowey's Overwold Theme, and Sans' Battle Theme. The track names are "Once Upon a Timeline," "You Best Frenemy," and "Moral Ambiguity."

Though @terra-the-axolotl made the first version on accident, @Marketabletrust will remake Flowey's Survival Encounter Theme, "Rooted Past." Fun fact, the public releases of that track and "Silent Home" were only one track at first. I spent like 40 minutes using Audacity to cut "Silent Home" in half since I thought it part of it sounded great as an ambient theme, while the other being a battle theme. It's gonna get remade since I'd rather have the track be its own thing that wasn't ripped from an ambient theme and made in one night. We'll see it eventually.

As for "Once Upon a Timeline," "You Best Frenemy," and "Moral Ambiguity," TWO OF THEM ARE OFFICALLY OUT! The first two tracks are out and you can listen to them right now. Check the game's description for the music channel and SoundCloud.

As of now, only two tracks are left to be finished. "Rooted Past II" and "Moral Ambiguity." I don't have too much to say about them because I want to keep it secret. But, they'll both be something different from other megalos or flowey themes, while staying true to the original source. There is one story I will say though.

How Moral Got Its Ambiguity Back

Way back in like March of 2024, I recruited a composer who isn't on the team anymore. I will not be naming him. After about two months maybe, he gave me a 30 second intro concept that sounded like Undertale Yellow. Then for the next six months or so, anytime I'd ask for an update, he'd blow me off by saying, "Progress has been slow," wouldn't respond, or would talk about how his life problems have been interfering with the track progress. I get if life has been in the way, but you can't just blow me off without any clear update and procede to still upload music or work on other tracks, that's just kinda insulting. I also understand if UTUF isn't their main priority, but still. They chose to join the team and known the effort they'd have to put in. It was sad though, since they were extremely talented. I gave them an ultimatum and started my look for a new composer to make the track. @Marketabletrust was my first choice since he is on the Quietus Team (for Quietus by @X_Productions_ ) with me. I asked him if he'd make the track. He agreed, but declined to join the team. After a few weeks, he gave a longer concept than the old guy, so I booted the first composer of the track off the team. Some days later, MarketableTrust told me he'd have to stop working on the track due to lack of ideas. I said that I was fine with that and asked for the FLP. I then moved the workload for that track over to @terra-the-axolotl . Nothing came out of her working on it for a while until I was talking with MarketableTrust. He joined the team and that's when "Rooted Past II" got moved to Marketabletrust's workload and "Moral Ambiguity" would stay on Terra's. That's The Curse of Moral Ambiguity and how it's been haunting me for about 9 months (as of writing this).

There isn't too much to say here. Most of what's left is just promo art, some animation for out-of-game stuff, and the devlog banner piece. Also, some pieces like the game page banner and maybe the logo will be redone by @dotdotdot21 , @GimmeMocca , and @Stupiditydx . @Stupiditydx hates the banner because of how old it is, which I see it's flaws, so it will be redone sometime over 2025, but there is also a mini animation/animatic that's just a concept for now. I'll talk about in "Extra Bits".

Flowey Sprites

There has been some progress on a sprite sheet for Flowey. It's mainly just a battle pose and some battle expressions. Later on, our two other spriters will come together to make their parts with @boberNinja3356 of the Flowey sheet for his survival encounter.

Sans Sprites

The Sans sheet has been done for a fair bit after its three (I think it was three) previous versions. Credits to @X_Productions_ , he's extremely talented and has worked very hard on it for a long time. And special thanks to @Big_FOM for a special blaster sheet. Not too much to be said here about the sheet, but I think people will like his design here when it's shown off more in time.

Special Animations

I've mentioned before about a mysterious "Gatorade Slip" animation. It's a real thing and will be shown in action later on. Credits to @SpacedOutCyntax / @SSC_1963 for that animation and another. He also made an animation for a "Baseball Swing." He isn't apart of the team, but his help is greatly appreciated. He's such a talented spriter and it was great talking with him when he was making the animations. Thank you for your help SpaceStationaryCore, I hope to potentially get more animations from you sometime in the future .

Intro Frames

We wouldn't keep the intro frames as bad placeholder. Someone would have to eventually get them done. And someone finally is. The official frames are being worked on by @isnotpeanut currently. Not done, but being worked on.

Story / Writing:

Not too much to say here as well. The writing for the demo has been done for a while. I've laid out the entire story, except the ending. I still need to think of an ending. But, that's a while from now. I'm trying to lean right between fanon and canon writing. I personally love and hate fanon Sans. And I feel like writing him as just normal Sans would be a bit boring, so I'm trying to strike a balance for who he is in UTUF. Check the game's description for a recap on its exposition, if you like or have forgotten.

The translation for the game will hopefully be done in Spanish, Russian, Japanese, French, and potentially other languages (I'm not sure what others I should include).

@DEL866917 will be helping the team out by translating the transcript of the demo from English to Japanese. Team members will help out with other translations later on, maybe.

New Tester being @SkellyUT . Thank you for joining us along our journey and hope you like the game when you eventually test it.

Most of the recent progress has been mainly working towards a trailer for an event, but it's not Underevent. Me and many others applied for Underevent and got rejected. So someone made a discord server for all of the "rejects," then someone threw the idea of making their own event for projects with huge potential that didn't make the cut. This event came to be known as Undertale Archives. But, recently they announced a hiatus for until they get a proper team and the project's unclear future has made me pull out this year. There is a trailer, but it isn't finished right now. Once it's done, it'll be used for UTA, maybe UnderEvent if we get in an apply, or as a demo trailer by itself. I'm not sure.

A public discord server has been set up and is ready for people to come in. It'll obviously be filled with shitposts and stuff from the team, but there will be real news every so often.

Mini Animation/Animatic:

The mini animation/animatic is a Team Unoriginal interview (credits to @Stupiditydx for the idea). It'll be a funny way to add more identity to the team outside of "the people who are making UTUF." I saw the Undertale Last Breath team did something similar, so why can't we? Nothing too serious, just something funny. No idea when or if it'll be done. Just an idea for now.

What’s The Deal With Blue Gatorade?

I’m actually gonna give context for this now. @Stupiditydx came up with a stupid idea that whenever Sans turn you blue, he spill blue Gatorade on you. I found that ridiculous, but a good idea. I refined it a little to show up once rather than every time he turns you blue. Also, I've never actually drank blue Gatorade before, so I’m gonna try it for the first time if the game page hits 100 followers.

Future Plans?

I have obviously planned for the future. I have planned out every encounter, ending (not for Hard Mode), and how they lead into each other. But outside of the game, I don’t have too many plans. I am obviously gonna apply to Underevent 2025 and I have planned out a few other ideas for potential future projects. But, those aren’t the main focus right now. The plans for the game and my future projects will stay private until I feel it’s necessary to talk about them.

Demo Release Date???

No, I haven't been thinking about this, since I don't want to rush it. Sometime in 2025, most likely. Be on the look out around to see clips and stuff. I'll post serious stuff here and small clips I'll be sharing around on my YouTube channel, in the Green Sans server, and the game's public server. Just look around and you'll find it.

The Release Date of the Devlog

The day of January, 7 at 12:07 A.M. is special to me. No, no one died or anything. But, one year ago today (as of posting this), Undertale Unforgiven's development fully began. Back when I thought the game could be made by three people being @Stupiditydx , someone who won't be named, and me. I thought I could write, code, manage/coordinate the whole project. Stup could make all the art and sprites. And the unnamed person could also do others sprites and music. Oh, how naive I was back then. The team has grown to about 18 people. I was surprised to be able to find even five people months ago, I never expected to get 18. The amount of people who joined us after seeing what I saw in the project still leaves me in disbelief (omg disbelief reference). I am proud of where this project has gone in only one year. Even though it isn’t the most popular thing in existence, I’m still proud and can’t see to where the project itself gets to with time. Thank you for reading, see you in the near future. Hope you, dear reader, have a great new year.

I finally decided to try and make my own art (without being bored in class). I think it turned out well other than torso proportions.

First real art piece that I fully tried on (first digital piece too). I think it looks great for a first time digital piece. Feedback is welcomed and encouraged.
