Let's start with Shinjis eyes.

Shinji's eyes are quite simple, his eyes are decently wide open, but they look a bit dazed. he has an arch at the top dipping a little bit going toward the nose, dipping more than a bit going towards the ear. his iris is deep blue with a black outline and a black shadow with a nice white shine. somehow, these eyes reflect his personality to a tee. Hes depressed, he's tired, he doesn't want to do anything anymore near the end of the series, that's why his eyes are blue, to reflect his sadness. his eye shape reflects his tiredness, his inability to think for himself, he does what people tell him to, but he isn't fully rei, he has some personality to him. and it all shows in his eyes.

Speaking of rei, here are her eyes.

She looks... depressed...

She looks... dead inside....

why? well she isn't actually depressed, or dead inside, she just... exists. she doesn't do much. much like shinji she just follows orders, no own thoughts at the start of the series. there isn't much roundness to her eye shape, it's very sharp. if her eyes represent her personality, it does a good job, she isn't bubbly, she doesn't have anything interesting about her, and that's why they are brown, it's a bland colour. however, its a more... saturated brown. it has a hint of red. because she isn't actually that bland, she is very intersting. she feels like the complete opposite to asuka, and like her eyes and personality are a part of shinji. like reis heart inside of shinjis and vice versa.

and then there is asuka.
