Found a smash guide, I had written in 2021. Back then I had been playing for a year and a lot of my opinions have changed so I may make a new guide soon. Have fun reading though lol. this was directed towards my friends so some stuff might not make sense.

Salutations,

This time I’m bringing something a little different to the table. This time I have prepared a full guide on how You can be good at fighting games or other things in general. I hope that you enjoy my guide and that it helps.

Starting the game:

Let’s paint a picture, you have just gotten super smash bros for the Nintendo 3DS. What should you do? The best thing to do is to try out all the characters in either training or smash mode ( against a low-level CPU). You need to do this so that you can find a character that compliments your play style. Whilst looking for a main do not choose a character just because they are top tier. It is much better if you choose a character that you think is fun to play. Choosing a character that you like to play will make training and improving less like as chore instead it will be fun. This will also improve your improvement rate. Furthermore, if you can’t find a main straight away don’t worry as there are also in lockable character that you may like to play.

Whilst looking for a main, I do recommend learning some of the basics such as walking, running, jumping, tilts, smash attacks, and specials. If you want to learn more about them, I recommend this video:

Once you have chosen a character to main, it is essential that you stick to them. Sticking to one character will make you much better at the game much faster and will also allow you to focus on things other than character specific stuff such as neutral. If you think what I’m saying right now is completely made up, I shall present you with a real-life example of someone who sticked with a character and of a person who hasn’t:

Whereas, I have been solo making Lucina for a year now that is almost the same amount of time, I have had the game for. In 1 year, I have completely grasped the concept of advantage, neutral, advantage, My characters movement techniques, Lucina’s combos, Lucina’s edge guarding, and my entire play style is centred on abusing Lucina’s strengths. My friend on the other hand has been playing smash bros for 3 years now and has been constantly changing mains. As a result of this he doesn’t know how to do anything with the characters he plays and hasn’t even learnt what neutral is.

As you can see, I am already a far more sophisticated player than my friend even though he’s been playing for a longer time. This is mostly due to me devoting all my time to one character whilst my friend fumbles around with every character that he thinks is broken.

Right now, you may be saying, “But Sekiyo the top players I see play multiple characters.” That is a true statement but even godly players such as Mew2King only played one character for a long amount of time and only started playing other characters after they dominated the world or had mastered their character. We aren’t going to be the next Gods of smash bros any time soon, so it’ll be better to stick to one character.

Now that you know the importance of sticking to one character, we shall move onto the next part but first I shall recommend some characters for beginners:

Cloud, Mario, Lucina, Marth, and Captain Falcon are all good characters for beginners as they teach you good habitats and teach you a very clean and adaptive play style.

You don't have to play these characters, but I heavily recommend trying them. If you like any one of them great and if you don't it's fine as well as there are over 30 characters for you to choose.

What to do after you have established your main?

So, after you have chosen your main, the first thing you should be focusing on is movement. Movement is very important in smash Bros so mastering this should be your priority. Do not start practicing combos straight away as combos require good movement and precise inputs which a beginner doesn't have.  Practicing combos will also make you neutral much worse making it so that you wont be able to do the combos in the first place.

The first movement techniques to practice are short hopping and full hopping. If you didn't know, in smash Bros you can execute two different kinds of jumps. A short hop that doesn't go that high and a full hop that goes much higher. Every character has a different jump height as well as fall speed, gravity, and jump squat. Characters with a high fall speed will fall faster than characters with a low fall speed. A character with a high gravity will get to the peak of their jump much faster than a character with a low gravity. Jump squat is how long it takes for a character to get air born.

More will be sent soon… (more never came lol)

If you want more faster i recommend channels such as IzawSmash, Core A gaming, Leon Massey or top players of the respected game you are playing such as Mckleo for smash ultimate.
