In the full game you get the choice to retry the battle, continue from the previous autosave or quit.

Played through my game Reindeer Story . 6 hours 35 mins on a bee-line to the end without side-content!
A regular playthrough should be about 10-13 hours. Super Mario RPG's length! Which is crazy to think about! I'm proud I've reached this point!
