Scott Cawthon, the creator of the popular horror game series Five Nights at Freddy’s, announced his retirement from professional game development in June 2021. The decision came after Cawthon faced backlash for his political donations to Republican party candidates, including former President Donald Trump, Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell, and Democratic representative Tulsi Gabbard. Cawthon initially remained silent on the backlash, until he eventually published a lengthy Reddit post entitled “My Response and maybe last post". In the post, he maintained that he loves his LGBTQIA2S+ fanbase and that he has always tried to treat everyone fairly, regardless of their gender, race, religion or sexual orientation. However, he decided to retire from the FNaF brand after the controversy.
