Hmm, ok i don't think I actually need those variables, at least not all the time.
I should be able to use lengthdir_x and lengthdir_y with my target coordinates to clamp the value in a circle around the player.
I just don't know how X'D
So I spent a while remaking the title screen load code only to realise the reason it was taking so much longer than a normal island was because the file for it had all the objects in one big list instead of being broken up in to chunks
