I don't really play fighting games, but one of my favorite fighting game characters is Pom from Them's Fightin' Herds! 
So, this probably isn't the first game I played, but one of the first games I remember playing and enjoying is Pokémon LeafGreen. I'm still a Pokémon fan to this day, so clearly the experience stuck!
