You know this quote: "...Heroes get remembered, but legends never die."
In Lovebrush Chronicles, Clarence's story in Godheim is called "The Legend" and in it, he's an immortal trying to stop the Glacial Butterflies. These monsters have been murdering countless people and blanketing the world in snow. Through his efforts, he gains a reputation for being a powerful mage, and later he becomes The Archmage.
He ends up sacrificing himself and finally succeeds in ridding the world of the Glacial Butterflies with the protagonist's help.
Do you know what happens at the end??? Both in memory and physically he's not dead. He'll never die. His legacy lives on through stories told to the people of Godheim, and as part of his sacrifice, he is trapped forever...here.
And as an extra gut punch, to quote the game: "He will remain 'alive', if you can call it that, alone in his complete and utter desolation."
His legendary feats will be remembered for the rest of time, which is what the quote is referring to, but also, he as THE LEGEND will NEVER DIE.
HOW DID I NOT REALIZE THAT SOONER.
Every time I go back and think about Godheim's story and characters, I always come out of it with a new appreciation for what the writers were able to do, even if this is just one small story in an Otome game. I might have to write and post an essay here discussing the symbolism, themes, and characters within it because I love it so much.
