Important news, please read.

[EDIT: I am humbled by how supportive the majority of you are of my decision. It’s really heartwarming to hear all the kind things you have to say, so thank you to every single one of you that have supported and continue to support me, you mean the world to me, and I do this all for you. Thank you.]

Hi guys.

There’s something I’ve had on my mind recently and I want to discuss it with you all and gather your opinions. It’s something very important and could determine the fate of this game. Please pay close attention.

As some of you may know, I recently released my Undertale Fan-game Engine (UTFGE), and it has a lot of neat new features that Don’t Forget doesn’t have.

My intention was to start porting the new features to DF after I had finished making the new engine, but I realised how much of a problem that actually was.

Not only would it be a long and tedious process to try porting all the new stuff over, but there’s a very high chance that it could be game-breaking and not even work, which isn’t good.

Now, I could easily leave DF the way it is and try to finish it, but for some reason that leaves me feeling unsatisfied, that DF could have been so much better.

So what does this mean?

Let me get straight to the point.

I want to scrap everything I’ve got and make Don’t Forget from the ground up again, using the new engine. I want to abandon the current game, which is already more than 75% complete, and start all over again.

That might sound utterly stupid, but hear me out.

My first UT fangame, Uppertale, was meant to be amazing. I had so many ideas planned for it, but due to the stress from me having to change the game over and over again because I was never satisfied with it, I got tired of it. So I half-assed the pacifist ending and then cancelled it. The reason the game runs so poorly, if at all, is because the code is very fragile. I restarted the project so many times, but I didn’t really start over from nothing. I just removed some rooms from the project and continued to add new stuff to the already massive file without deleting any of the old stuff. This made the file a lot larger than neccessary, hence why it barely runs. Don’t Forget may end up this way, and I really don’t want it to. It’s one of the games I am the most proud of.

I’ve said plenty of times that I’ve finished planning out the story of the game and I am satisfied with it, but to be honest, I’m not. It sounds good on paper, but in-game, it isn’t fun. It isn’t interesting. I’m trying to cater to so many people with different headcanons that the story is a mess. I tried to keep the backstory of Gaster and Sans vague, even though the original point of the game was to reveal it all. It’s not the game I had envisioned when I first started the project.

Another thing about the story is its overall tone. The game is dark, depressing, and not very funny at all. Undertale was an emotional game for sure, but it was really funny, so having a fan-game where there’s little to no humor at all just feels weird. I really wanted to add humor throughout DF but there was no place to put it that wasn’t out of place. One example of this is the signs. Originally they were written by Gaster, but they weren’t in his character at all. They sounded like a dumbed-down version of Papyrus, but I thought they were funny. However, they just really didn’t fit in with what was going on.

So basically, I want to restart the game. Not only to get all the new features from the UTFGE, but because I want to change the entire story and overall tone of the game. It will still be serious at some parts, of course, but it’ll taken on a more lighter tone, and it will finally be the fangame that I’ve always wanted to make.

However, this is where you guys come in.

I want to know your thoughts on this. Should I restart the game? Or just try to finish what I’ve got, even if I don’t really like it?

Put the number of your answer in the comments:

  1. Restart the game! Make this the best Undertale fan-game ever!

  2. Finish what you’ve got! You’re soooo close!

  3. Fuck all this, remake Uppertale you friccin moron!!!11!!!

Thanks everyone, and have a nice day :)

We promised that Harlow would get a haircut if they made it through Round 2 of the OC Poll, so we (reluctantly) delivered...
