January 2026 Update | Perseverance Revival

Hello again! This is Jad, the lead of the Undertale Purple - Perseverance Revival project.

We had originally intended to post a new update on the day of Undertale's 10th anniversary, but a lot of things were happening in the personal lives of the whole team around then. We got around to it eventually, though!

To get things started, in honour of Undertale's 10th anniversary (which was now months ago), some of us at Studio Restart wanted to share our memories of how we first discovered Undertale!

First up, here's Aria's memory:

“I came across Undertale from the initial trailer, and played the demo over and over. It was my second PC game I ever bought with my own money. Having played lots of RPGs as a younger child (Undertale came out when I was ~14) even the ones more geared towards my age group never made me laugh or feel as much emotion as Undertale, besides maybe Mother 3. I remember struggling to solve the ways to spare enemies and struggling to dodge in the harder fights of the game. But ultimately I overcame it, and love the game to this day, fostering the love for indie games that I hold to this day.”

Next, here's Charlie's memory:

“Undertale and I have a strange relationship. Unlike Deltarune, I technically have never finished Undertale, the few playthroughs I have done never even getting to the Papyrus fight. This was mainly due to having grown up with a Chromebook instead of an actual PC or Laptop, so instead I experienced the game vicariously through YouTubers, most notably being Jacksepticeye, who I was an avid fan of at the time. I do think the takeaways I had from the game were the same most had: it made me realize that a game could be funny, meta (hell I learned what meta humor was because of Undertale), serious, tragic, and beautiful without sacrificing anything. The game was and is a huge inspiration for myself, finding out that Toby (with some help from Temmie and others) pretty much made the whole game himself, it pushed me to continue to be creative, and it’s my dream to release my own game someday because of it.”

And lastly, here's mine:

“I first started playing Undertale in late 2016, as a Year 8 student (8th grader, for the non-Australians out there). Back then, I was in my "cool" phase, and had the mindset that the only good games out there were high budget, high fidelity ones, like Call of Duty and all the sports games. A friend of mine at school suggested I play Undertale, saying “you gotta look past the pixel graphics.” He Air-dropped it to me (we had MacBook Air laptops, which also meant we had to run the game via Wine), and it didn't take me long before I realised I wanted to record myself playing it for my YouTube channel. That original playthrough, as horrendously low quality as it is, is still there! Undertale snapped me out of that childish mindset I had, and absolutely charmed me with its worldbuilding, characters, story, soundtrack and art. I've always enjoyed writing stories, and my experience with Undertale ultimately lead to me starting the Undertale Purple fangame project with Team Perseverance back in 2017, which we're now reviving!”

Speaking of the revival project, here's a status report!

Progress has slowed down a bit in the past few months, mostly due to work and other curveballs life tends to throw at people. However, a lot of progress has been made on the planning side of things, and Toby Fox's beautifully encouraging words during the anniversary stream gave us a shot of extra motivation!

In terms of the actual game, a lot of the basic coding has now been set up. We also have a draft of the opening cutscene script, and the first two rooms of the Ruins (both in terms of coding and new sprite work) are almost complete!

Plus, there is one other thing I wanted to tell you all about that I'm really excited for!

We're in the midst of finalising a very important character for Undertale Purple, who, due to short-sightedness on the original project, didn't exist before. I won't say too much about them at this stage, but I will leave you with the following teaser:

There are two tidbits you can learn about the character from this image if you follow the steps hinted at in the riddle. Good luck!

[OLD] New Sprite! This sprite is one of our original monsters called Grumpy Vine. The idea was by PetertheMinion, the concept art was made by King456Minion, and the sprite was made by Karate Red. Thanks so much for making it and in such quick time too!

[OLD] A New Sprite is Here! The idea was by PetertheMinion and this one is another sprite made by Karate Red, and it is literally a snake made of water. (Don’t judge) Thanks Karate Red for all that he has done to contribute to this game!

"Thanks guys for endless hours of fun." 👍

(My first fan art. Read the article, please.)

We made a lot of improvements on the Freezing Plains visual. Things like pine trees, tiny bushes, some rocks, and others game props!

"Our work is never over" they said.

In the quest for accessibility, I'm adding Resurrection Shrines for players on the 'novice' end of the platforming spectrum.

In order to unlock the power of a Shrine, you must collect 3 'Souls' from your dead corpses! (the floating blue orbs)

Finished work on the emotions of a new character for the tank universe
