I’ve been working on level bosses and player sprites.
On the former, my plan is to make them looking like I’ve pulled them from 80’s synth music covers and movies, with a hard inspiration from works like tron or Hajime Sorayama’s art. Expect chrome looking cybernetic people and or neon-lined energy thingies. And my intention is to make them attack non-stop the player, so fighting a boss means to find the pace to move and attack without staying quiet on the same spot for more than a second.
Relating to sprites, aside from bosses which will be almost 100% handmade pixel art, player ships and enemies are rendered from 3D models. For now I’ll render every ship and enemy (again, aside from bosses) this way, first because movement gets more fluid and smooth, and second because is fastest. Anyway I have plans (that is if I have time for that) to use the rendered sprites as a base to make handmade pixel-art versions of players ships and enemies. That way, the visual difference between small sprites and boss sprites will be lesser, and the general feeling will be more cohesive.
Added a new screenshot to media with a draft of a boss (the Face) and the latest sprite of one of the starting characters.
Also! new 80er sprited fonts for GUI!
