I have watched it and…yeah, even though I’m not a Nintendo fan or a Mario fan, I can say that my review for this one is an “average”, if you know what I mean.
I think it’s nice, not awesome, but good, in my opinion. I kind of liked it. It has a lot of references from games, and the voices are nice enough. I heard that a lot of people are disappointed in Chris Pratt’s voice of Mario, but since I’m not a Mario fan at all, I have zero problem with any of the voices in the film. Though, the only voice I enjoyed was Jack Black since he is the only voice actor I know out of the rest of the film.
I read the Wikipedia article of the film and I am stunned that it has more positive reception from audiences than critics.
And for some reason, these 2 lines made me laugh so hard.
Anyways, I think the film focused too much on game references, and I think the best reference the film ever has was the MarioKart references. I mean, the rest of it is just fine but it’s just a bit too much. It also makes the film feel very uncanny due to the fact that Mario had zero experience of the video game world like he typically does in Mario games, but I don’t care about that a lot.
The character models in the film are decent and they are somewhat identical to the character models from other Illuminations films. Basically, all characters are nice.
OH, and one concern I have in the beginning of the film is that after Mario and Luigi watches their own commercial, there’s another character playing the Donkey Kong arcade game, which I’m not sure if it’s legally alright. I mean, I heard that there was another developer named “Ikegami Tsushinki” who made the source code for Donkey Kong and then legal troubles went from there…I know that was a long time ago, but HOLY SHOOT, it was so bad back then.
Well, with that out of the way, the most hilarious part of the film was Bowser begging for love from Princess Peach in order to continue their malicious scheme with “ruling” the world with HER. The funniest part is that Peach is completely aware that it is irrefutably against the entire her environment to team up and marry with Bowser, and she forcefully denies her marriage with Bowser, but then that turtle moron just threatens her to kill Toad in exchange to convince her. But then Toad and Peach secretly comes up with a plan to freeze the weeding as another attempt to deny the marriage. Another funny part is that Bowser said, “I’m breaking up with you”, even though neither both of them have even been married yet! LOL!
Well, in conclusion. I think it’s a nice film. Again, it’s not awesome, but good. I can’t say that it’s bad because of the effort animators have put into this film. I’m not planning to become a critic myself and I’ll never be.
If I can rate this film, I would give it a 7/10.
Best reguards, Papichi05.
