Next manga entrance: Jujutsu Kaisen

Type of manga: Shonnen, Action, Adventure, Supernatural, Fantasy.

Personal rating: 8/10

Jujutsu Kaisen has been almost the most popular anime for the last 3 years. Its action filled adventure into a world filled with curses and powers called curse technique are popping up everywhere in the internet. From memes of its own show to relatable day by day activities relating to its characters.

Jujutsu Kaisen is in fact so good that it was nominated for the anime of the year twice, winning both in 2021 and 2024. In 2024 nominated in most of the categories, winning 11 out of 32 awards.

But everything i was just yapping about was the anime, not the manga. As the show is so popular, so is the manga, with being one of the top 5 every week.

The manga itself has managed to get a long run into its succes, having 300k people weekly reading its new chapter releases. It has 253 chapter (as of 10th march 2024) and its not going to end soon enough, more of less beacause of the plot so far... While the art of its chapters are kind of rushed every week, it kind of gives error for either the art having missing parts or the translation, but these are minor and dont appear as often. The story itself is very good in my opinion, from the very beginning till the end of the culling games (the third major arc in the manga and the next arc to be animated by MAPPA for its third anime season).

Introduction:

A boy named Yuji Itadori is an average high schooler. Living with his only grandparent at the age of 15. Yuji is kind of ignorant about his grandpa dying, but he listens to his advice about helping others from danger. During a night at the high school, scavenging with his friends/classmates inside the school for ghosts, they gather an unknown talisman that is a severed old finger. Yuji is met with Megumi Fushiguro, a first year member of the Jujutsu high school, who is on the hunt to find the severed finger of a very dangerous curse named ”Ryomen Sukuna”, trying to get it back from the boy.

The cursed finger manifests itself into a beast out of the sudden, attacking Yujis friends, paralyzing them and trying to consume them. Megumi tries to save the students from entering the beast, but has no major effect. Itadori with his insane power and potential, jumps outs of a window inside the hallway that both Megumi and the beast are, striking the curse with his feet.

Yuji manages to get the two students out of the beast, leaving Megumi to fight on his own using a cursed technique, also failing. Megumi is thrown out of the high school into a near outdoor rooftop. Itadori follows, trying to strike the beast till exhaustion, but to no effect, the curse is too strong for him to do any damage. As a last resort, Yuji swallows the finger, incarnating the long lost soul of Ryomen Sukuna within the finger.

The chapter ends with Megumi ready to use a curse technique in order to exorcise the curse of Ryomen Sukuna and Yuji himself.

Overall rating:

The manga is up to having 4 current arcs at the moment and possibly is on the last. The first arc is more an introduction for both the main antagonists and all of the members from jujutsu high school, the good-will event being having focus on all of the students and teachers. The Shibuya Incident arc, in my opinion, is where the real jujutsu world is put to the test. Having one of its most powerfull people sealed and everyone having to save him agaisnt some powerfull curses is the perfect theme for a manga that uses supernatural as its main course. The culling games is where jujutsu kaisen is at its peak in story, taken inspiration from the hunger games, putting up everyone to either go solo killing other people with powerfull cursed techniques or team up for points, meeting other foes or potential allies.

But so far the 4th major arc has some flaws when it comes to the storytelling, having more plot twists and plot ass pulls the show has gained so far into killing 2 enemies. Also happening during the culling games.

The story is very good during its 3 arcs, but the 4th flopped so bad i cant give a score more than 7.50/10.

Considering the manga has a flashback arc during the early days of jujutsu high and the real reason why Gojo is considered the strongest and the manga also has a spin off just for Yuta and his backstory, the stories are good so them alone have an 8/10.

The art of jujutsu kaisen is medium level, other times it uses low level of complication, but in action, the art is on its peak. I really like the artstyle, it is kind of unique in a way of how clothes and faces are designed. Ill give this one a 9/10.

Conclusion:

The manga is as good as the anime. Taken to the fact that imdb scored this series as an 8.6 and the anime is an actuall visual representation of the manga one to one, gives my review of it an average score.

The manga is free to read on MangaPlus, having 3 chapters from the start of the manga to 3 of the most recent chapters fully available to read anytime while the in-content is a one time read.
