As it happens, I managed to restore this version and played it with my brother to give it a test. I also took a couple screen shots. I'll show them and then try to explain what's happening and what I was doing
So in this image we were testing a couple of things out. We tested if you could stand on top of each other, but you just bounce off each other. We also tested out if we could collide with each other while walking and we were actually able to push each other around. There was also a really weird glitch(?) where when one of us get a power up, the other player would get the same one, but that's all that really happened there.
Basically what happened was I told my brother to progress through the level while I stayed at the start and the screen split in 2 with a nice little fade effect. When he finished the level the timer kept going because I was at the start and when it hit 0 I died and Mario slid down the flagpole and into the castle. We had to restart it because Luigi was in some sort of death soft lock after the timer (or at least that's my guess) and losing all your lives and playing 2P again didn't get Luigi back.
I don't have a screenshot of this but I wanted to add it anyways. Whenever Mario dies Luigi dies too, but when Luigi dies Mario remains alive except forwhen he hits the flagpole, where he dies instead of the level clear animation.
(Bonus screenshot:
I also found this while data mining. Judging by the stance, it could of been planned for this game to have 3 or 4 players instead of just 2 like in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, or perhaps it could of been for a whole separate game)
Well thanks for reading and I'll update you as soon as I find more!
(Ok that's the end of it. I just wanna let you know you can find the og sources by clicking the images, peace)
