Progress Report - February 2021


Howdy!

This month's devlog isn't going to be anything too special. We're mostly just going to be covering some general updates, and showcasing some minor sprite changes.

With that being said, let's start!


Localization Support

In case you didn't notice, we recently released Demo v1.0.7, which featured official support for Spanish, Portuguese, and Dutch localizations!

More official patches are not currently in the works, but if you're skilled enough and willing to help out, feel free to contact us on Discord!

We also plan on supporting more non-Latin characters in the future, as well as providing support for custom fonts. However, that hasn't been a priority right now.

Minor Sprite Updates!

After the demo was released, and we began work on Starlight Isles, we ended up deciding to make refinements to the sprites for Papyrus and Sans / Crossbones!

First of all, here's Papyrus's new sprites! (We actually showed these off on Twitter last month. It was funny!)

We made these changes in order to remain faithful to his recognizable silhouette, highlighting his body type. After some back and forth changes, we settled on something we're happy with!

Sans / Crossbones hasn't gone through any drastic changes, with minor tweaks being made to his overworld sprites for the time being. We're pretty satisfied with these, too!

Starlight Isles Updates!

While we won't get into too much detail here, some minor updates to Starlight Isles include:

  • Multiple Papyrus & Crossbones encounters are mostly complete.

    • We're testing out how the current script iteration flows in-game (taking into account each route, too) in order to make changes as necessary.

  • Around 5-7 rooms are mostly complete! These consist of entirely original level design, puzzles, and encounters.

  • Dialogue trees for multiple unique enemies have been implemented in-game, alongside their battle sprites + idle animations!

    • We're still conceptualizing a lot of their attacks, which we hope to start fleshing out more and doing the art for soon.

  • The introductory puzzles for brand new puzzle mechanics have been added in-game! You can also use these mechanics later on to explore.

Other Updates!

As a quick recap for things we mentioned in last month's progress report:

  • Spep Mode: Since we're focusing on developing Starlight Isles (and outlining the entire game), this hasn't been a huge priority. We probably won't be reporting on this for a while until we get some work done on it.

  • Soundtrack: We've uploaded some extra music tracks to our SoundCloud! We're still hoping to get started on YouTube uploads at some point--we've been pretty busy.

  • Chapters vs Full Release: We're not ready to talk about this one just yet!

  • Developer Commentary Stream: We still don't have a solid date for this, since a lot of us have been relatively busy with school, jobs, and personal life alongside development. We'll let you know when we have something planned!

  • Post-Demo Character Designs: The base sprites (while subject to change) for Alphys, Undyne, Asriel, and Sir Scratchalot have all been made--the only one missing is Toriel, whose design we've fleshed out more. We'd like to reveal these in a video format, though that would take much longer than simply posting them. Please let us know which you'd prefer in the comments!

  • Scrapped Content: Still no updates on an "art book" PDF, though we've recently been posting some scrapped content to our social media! These include:

UnderEvent 2021

(EDIT 2: The final game reveal for UnderEvent has gone live!)

In just one month, UnderEvent will go live! It's an unofficial presentation of UNDERTALE fangames, including our very own--TS!UNDERSWAP! We'll have a short presentation, where we'll discuss our project's 4-year development history, and show off what we've been doing at the end!

Make sure to be there on March 13th, 2021! You're not going to want to miss it.
