Progress Update - August, 2020

Hi there! It's been 2 days since the reveal of Kirby: Dark Paradox, the one and only (probably not only one), fan-remake of the old school fan-game: "Kirby: Invaders from the dark".

Like i said in the description, the game had some actual progress in the private server, related to concepts and art made for it. Still, waiting for some developers, but actually going well.

A gift from the stars... The Staff of Cosmos!

The Staff of Cosmos is the key item found in the original "Invaders of the dark". I had problems uploading this Concept Art because of it's size, so here you go:

As you see, the staff itself had to be redisigned several times, due to the original color pallet not convincing us (@WhyIamaPotato and I). Several attempts were made to correct some aspects of this staff, and then, @WhyIamaPotato came up with the best collor pallet for the staff... well, two of them:

Both colors were actually very fitting and original, being the Colder pallet one the most interesting color pallet yet, but the Warmer pallet the most fitting one in my opinion. So, i decided to go with the Warmer pallet, and also giving it a cool pattern like the OG Star Rod, but with it's unique style. @WhyIamaPotato agreed with me, and thus "Redesign v1" for The Staff of Cosmos was born.

New concept!: "Star Fragments"

You may have already seen this piece of art before, and in the front page. Well, in the similar way to the Crystal Shards from "Kirby 64", and Code Cubes in "Planet Robobot", we have the "Star Fragments".

Star Fragments can be found in each level stages. The original idea, is that the fragments would be found after completing each world. BUT, i decided that the "Star Shards" were the ones to be found only in Boss' Stages. That means, to gather a level' Star Shard, you must get all Star Fragments in said level, and after defeating the level Boss, you'll have the Star Shard. It's kind of similar to the collectibles in Dream Land 3, and each level has some unique ways to catch those Star Fragments, so keep an eye for that!

The Invaders from the Dark ARE BACK! (once again)

And saving the best for the last, THEY'RE FINALLY HERE!

All of the original Invaders are back, and being redisigned as well. Actually, @WhyIamaPotato did several re-designs for them, which resulted in this:

invaders1.png

Something actually unique, and that fits very well, not only to the new story line done for the game, but also vey appealing to Kirby itself, slog side with the game's main concept, making them less goofier, while maintaining the original essence of them. And then, @WhyIamaPotato did a second half:

It's current design mostly changed the colors to maintain a more mysterious aura in these characters. Their main purpose is the same as the original, making chaos. But here's the catch: As already teased, not only they want chaos, but to the main world (Dream Land, and possibly Pop Star) to assimilate with Darkness itself. rule over the shadows, and make the whole world perish! No wonder they've been imprisoned in those Gates for some long time...

There's also been a change in they're names, since i thought those names wouldn't actually fit for these kind of villains. These are the OG names, to give you some context:

  • Metuo (Black-hooded figure)

  • Pandora (Blue-hooded figure)

  • Molotov (Red-hooded figure)

These names don't even represent something in particular, or have similitudes like the Three Mage Sisters. I just felt like these were out of place. The only one i actually liked, was Molotov, since it's an acual clever Words play, given the element it represents. But i decided to make some changes to their names, like giving Pandora's name to the main "black-hooded figure", and using 2 new names based on real life mythology. Here's the result:

  • Pandora (OG: Metuo)

  • Dodonana (OG: Pandora)

  • Andromeda (OG: Molotov)

Yup, most of the names are based in Greek mythology, which is actually represented in the fan-remake's story, and it's lore.

Some other stuff planned...

Now let's talk about some other plans i have for the game (and this might be a tradition in future "Progress Updates").

One of the main thing i wanna make for this game, is giving them unique localizations like in the original Kirby games. You know, changing some names to their characters and some bosses, changing levels names, using proper translators from specific speaking languages, translating the modes and the story itself, etc.

Currently, the title of the game has been translated (thanks to some basic Google translator correct usage, and some of the team's native spanish and french) in different languages (including: EU variant, Spanish LA, Spanish (Spain), Japanese, Italian, EU French, and Canadian French), so if you're interested in giving a try in localization for the game in your native language, just hit me a comment/message, and let's give it a try!

Thanks for watching today's "Kirby: Dark Paradox - Progress Update"... see ya next time
