I've got some ideas cooking up recently, with this being one of them! Hopefully I'll maintain the motivation to bring all these ideas to life, so this is really a start.
When I was looking for a Generation 2 Pokémon to do, Pineco was the one I was interested in doing and got an idea for. I forgot Seedot and his line was a thing at the time, but I'm making sure the story behind this regional form works with that species.
Regional Pineco (Rock / Bug): Think of a region where local Pinecos are at competition with local Seedots, specifically about getting attention and taking foraged nutrients. While the Seedots didn't have to do anything to change their form, the Pinecos did to ensure that their species would survive, no matter what. Abandoning the pinecone concept, the acorn concept is now adapted with a stronger shell in mind. Both the top and bottom parts of the shell are hard as rock with increased defenses, allowing for greater impact upon falling from trees and greater protection from oncoming bird Pokémon. In addition, the coloration of the acorn-like shell is done in a way where it appears exotic and thus more worth getting; the hex-like pattern of the bottom part isn't just for show, as the crevices that formed it can emit a delectable scent that boosts the chances of getting attention. As a note, these Pinecos can open up their tops to consume nutrients, although it's often done quick or in hiding so nobody else could see the interior from within the shell.
In the forests where these Pinecos and Seedots are in their own competition, Pinecos have been at greater odds than their competitors since they've taken a different approach to their shells. Perhaps it's time that those now-struggling Seedots take action and start adapting a new method of survival...
