September Progress Report

(Undertale turns 4 + DF release date!)

Howdy, folks!

It's been a little while since the last progress report, hasn't it? As some of you may know, I've been working hard on a brand new game called "DoodleTrip" for a while now, and so that project took top priority for me.

However, plenty of progress on DF was still made during that period, and if you kept an eye on the progress bars in the description, you would have noticed them going up bit by bit. But I'll get more into DF in a bit. For now, let's talk about Undertale!

UNDERTALE TURNS 4!

Today is Undertale's 4th anniversary. Can you believe it's been nearly half a decade already? Time really does fly, huh. I was 14 when I first played Undertale, and now I'm 18 in my last year of college before I go to uni. And even to this day, Undertale has remained a large influence on my life and my endeavors.

I would not have grown to be the kind of game developer I am today without Undertale, and I doubt my upcoming game DoodleTrip would even exist if it weren't for the things I learned making Undertale fan-games.

Did you know there was a fully prototyped version of DF that looked like a NES game and played like Zelda: Breath of the Wild? It was very bizarre, but that game had 3D sections in it which helped me learn more about 3D design, and now I can apply that skill to DoodleTrip! Without Undertale, I likely wouldn't have even attempted it. I could go on and on, but I think you get the point. Undertale is a very special game to me, and I can only hope that I'm able to make something even half as charming one day.

So thank you Toby, and everyone else who helped make Undertale the game it is. I'm looking forward to what the future holds, especially Deltarune (in 7-ish years??)!

Anyway, now with my gushing out of the way let's talk about DF!

STORY MODE PROGRESS?

storymode_2.png

It's been about 3 months since I've last showed off anything related to Story Mode, and in that time the game has changed quite a bit! So much so that I'll need to re-explain a lot of it, so here I go!

So the idea of having seperate "worlds" to explore has remained largely the same. Chapter 1 will take place in what's called "World 1: Hometown".

The goal of World 1 is to collect 10 soul pieces as well as collectibles called "puzzle pieces" in order to progress to the next area. Some of you might remember that puzzle pieces used to be called "memory pieces", and you would collect them in order to unlock memories. This is no longer the case. Memories are still in the game, but you don't need memory pieces for them.

Puzzle pieces are now used in order to unlock new worlds (yes it's very much like Banjo-Kazooie I know!). You will need to collect a certain number of puzzle pieces from each world in order to unlock the others. There will be 6 "worlds" in the game: 3 main worlds, 2 bonus worlds, and a world for the finale.

You won't need to collect every single puzzle piece in the game, but there will be a reward for those who do.

And for you genocidal folk out there, I can confirm that there will still be a genocide route to take, if that's your thing.

From my estimates, World 1 will probably take around 2 hours to fully complete, depending on your pace. If you don't collect everything and rush through it, it'll take less time than that. But there's a sizeable chunk of stuff to do so hopefully it's enough to keep you satisfied until World 2 comes out!

Speaking of World 2 and beyond, there will only be World 1 available in the first release of the game (which I'll call v1.0 from here on out), although future worlds will be added in updates as they get made! When new worlds are added to Story Mode, they'll also be added to Multiplayer too.

Speaking of multiplayer...

MULTIPLAYER PROGRESS?

I'll be honest, multiplayer was in a bit of a slump for a little while, where no progress was being made on it. Luckily, things have picked up again and I'm pleased to say that Multiplayer will definitely be releasing alongside World 1 of Story Mode! However, a sacrifice had to be made in order to release it on time.

In order to get Multiplayer out with World 1, PvP has been left out of the first version of the game. Multiplayer will come with all of the things you would expect, plus the start of the new Master Quest and the new Free-For-All battle mode, but PvP will need to be added in a future update while I finalize it. Apologies for any inconvenience, but there will still be plenty of multiplayer goodness to sink your teeth into, so I hope that what's there will suffice for the time being!

Anyway, I could go on about the new stuff I've added to Multiplayer, but I think it would just be easier to just show you some gameplay instead, so here's a video:

What did you think? It probably wasn't as exciting to watch since I was the only one playing, but hopefully it helped you to understand more about how Multiplayer will work. I hope you're looking forward to it!

Alright, and finally, if you didn't already see it in the video above, I will confirm the release period for DF v1.0.

WHEN DOES THE GAME COME OUT, CHIEF?

I'm glad you asked! I know you've all been waiting a long time for this game to come out, and believe me the wait has also been very hard on me as well. Which is why I'm pleased to confirm that DF v1.0 will release in less than 2 weeks! With college assignments and work I can't give an exact day, but expect the game sometime this month at the very least. It is incredibly close to completion and I am so excited for you guys to try it!

CONCLUSION

Okie dokie, that should cover pretty much everything. Once again, happy birthday to Undertale, and thank you to everyone who's made the journey with this game so great. While I won't be continuing to make Undertale content after DF's future updates are finished, I know for a fact that the game will continue to influence me for years to come. Take care of yourselves, and I'll speak to you again very soon!
