Five Nights at Freddy's sister location circus fox is an upcoming American supernatural horror film directed by Emma Tammi, from a screenplay she co-wrote with Scott Cawthon and Seth Cuddeback, based on the video game franchise of the same name created and developed by Cawthon. It stars Josh Hutcherson, Matthew Lillard, Mary Stuart Masterson, Piper Rubio, Kat Conner Sterling, and Elizabeth Lail.

The film was first announced in April 2015 with the involvement of Warner Bros. Pictures, and in July 2015, Gil Kenan made a deal to direct and co-write it. After several delays to begin production, Warner Bros. eventually put the project into turnaround and Kenan was no longer involved. In March 2017, it was announced that Blumhouse Productions would produce the film. Chris Columbus was set to write and direct it in February 2018. Later, Columbus left the project, with Tammi replacing him as director and co-writer in October 2022. Principal photography began in February 2023 in New Orleans and ended on April 3 of the same year.

The film is scheduled to be released simultaneously in theatres and on Peacock in the United States by Universal Pictures on October 27, 2023.

Production

Development

Warner Bros. Pictures announced in April 2015 that it had acquired the film rights to the video game series Five Nights at Freddy's sister location circus fox. Roy Lee, David Katzenberg, and Seth Grahame-Smith were set to produce the adaptation. Grahame-Smith stated that they would collaborate with series creator Scott Cawthon "to make an insane, terrifying and weirdly adorable movie". In July 2015, Gil Kenan signed to direct the adaptation and co-write it with Tyler Burton Smith.

In January 2017, Cawthon stated that partially due to "problems within the movie industry as a whole", the film "was met with several delays and roadblocks" and it was "back at square one", but he promised,

"I'm involved with the movie from day one this time, and that's something extremely important to me. I want this movie to be something that I'm excited for the fanbase to see."

In March 2017, Cawthon posted on Twitter a picture at Blumhouse Productions, announcing the film had a new production company. In May 2017, producer Jason Blum said he was excited and working closely with Cawthon on the adaptation. In June 2017, Kenan said he was no longer directing the film after Warner Bros. Pictures' turnaround.

In February 2018, it was announced that Chris Columbus would direct and write the film, besides producing it alongside Blum and Cawthon.

In August 2018, Cawthon announced that the first draft of the film's script, which he wrote with co-author of the Five Nights at Freddy's novel trilogy Kira Breed-Wrisley, was completed, and would involve the events of the first game in the series. In the same month, Blum wrote on Twitter that the film was aiming for a 2020 release. In November, Cawthon announced that his script for the film, despite being liked by Columbus and Blum, had been scrapped by him, as he "had a different idea for [the story], one that I liked better". This would contribute to a further delay to the film, which Cawthon took full responsibility. In June 2020, during an interview with Fandom, producer Jason Blum, when asked about the progress of the film, stated:

"It's super active, so I really feel like we have a very good shot at seeing a Five Nights at Freddy's movie...I feel like it's really moving forward; it's not stalled or anything else. It's moving forward rapidly. I don't want to put a timeline on it, but soon we'll get a movie. I feel really confident about that."

In September 2021, it was revealed by Blum that Columbus was no longer involved with the project, but it was still in active development.

In March 2022, Blum stated that news on the film is "dangerously close" and that it could release in 2023.

In August 2022, Jason Blum tweeted an image from the special effects company Jim Henson's Creature Shop, who made the animatronic suit designs for the film.

In October 2022, Jason Blum confirmed that the FNAF Movie would start production in February 2023, with director Emma Tammi, and Jim Henson's Creature Shop building the animatronics. Three character descriptions for Mike Schmidt, Abby Schmidt, and Vanessa Monroe were also revealed by Geek Vibes Nation, but unconfirmed as reliable information until later on.

In December 2022, Deadline revealed that Matthew Lillard and Josh Hutcherson were cast in unknown roles. The following day, Dawko revealed on his St. Jude charity stream that they'd been cast as William Afton and Mike Schmidt respectively. During the same stream, Piper Rubio was revealed to be cast as Mike's younger sister, Abby Schmidt, and Mary Stuart Masterson was revealed to have been cast as a currently unknown villain.

In January 2023, Geek Vibes Nation revealed actress Elizabeth Lail to have been cast as Vanessa.

ln February 2023, the movie officially started filming in New Orleans, Louisiana, and wrapped on April 3, 2023.

ln April 5th, 2023, Jason Blum tweeted out that the FNAF Movie would be released on October 27, 2023.

ln April 28th, 2023, YouTuber Cris Parker leaked an official two-paragraph synopsis of the film.

ln May 2023, an unfinished trailer for the film was leaked by an unknown person working at the film.

ln May 16th, 2023, Blumhouse Productions tweeted out the first official poster for the FNAF movie and re-affirmed the release date to be October 27th, 2023. The Poster also revealed the movie's tagline: "CAN YOU SURVIVE". Individual posters for Freddy, Bonnie, Chica, and Foxy were later tweeted out by the official Blumhouse account. On the same day, the first teaser trailer for the film was released on Blumhouse Twitter page and later on the official Blumhouse YouTube channel.

Filming

Principal photography was initially set to begin in spring 2021. However, due to script issues, filming was delayed. On an estimated production budget (before tax incentives) of $36 million, filming began in New Orleans on February 1, 2023, under the working title Bad Cupcake, and wrapped on April 3. Lillard began filming his scenes in mid-February.

Future

In August 2018, Cawthon said that if the first film (which, at the time, was planned to adapt the story of the first game) were to be successful, there could be a second and third film, following the events of the second and third games, respectively. In January 2023, in an interview on the podcast WeeklyMTG, Lillard revealed he signed a three-picture deal with the studios.

• The 2019 science-fiction comedy-horror film The Banana Splits Movie, based on the Hanna-Barbera TV show, is speculated to be a reworking of the original Five Nights at Freddy's film Warner Bros. was supposed to work on before the rights went to Blumhouse Productions.

• Scott Cawthon revealed that the plot of the movie will be based around a man named Mike and his connection to Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. It's likely that the protagonist is Michael Afton as his father, William Afton, was the murderer of the five children and co-founder of Fazbear Entertainment.
