Hey everyone, it's certainly been a while since I visited this website.
While browsing YouTube today, I've stumbled upon one of the old JOLLY's trailers. That's when I decided to finally speak up about the game's issues.
A year ago I decided to cancel the aforementioned game without disclosing any reasons other than "lack of passion and future for the game".
Today I wanted to tell you what actually led to this in my own eyes, so you don't repeat my mistakes and have your projects running smoothly.
I want to make it clear straight away – with how ambitious for us I made this project – it would never come to life. As much as I tried to build myself an identity of a "professional fangame guy" with my old pfps and the way acted, I SUCK as a director and a writer, and that is one of the main reasons the project fell off.
I never gave deadlines and was never able to make people work for the project. And I failed miserably at making plans for the project.
That's what you get for going big on your first project.
But you can still make the game like this, well, eventually, so what else?
Textures and props
This. When we got the new Office, one thing was lacking – nice texturing. FazCho did a rookie job at the textures.
The other part of the building also needed props to bring it to life.
Finding a guy for textures and props can't be that hard, right?
Well, hard for me, apparently. I've taken a lot of time looking for people who would be able to retexture the office and work with us further. But two things always happened:
1) The person is not good enough.
2) The person rightfully wanted to be paid.
While the first one's understandable, the second one might come off as greedy.
I am NOT a greedy person or anything like that, the reason lies in the country that I reside in – Russia.
Ever since the start of the Russian-Ukrainian war, Russia has been put under sanctions. One of the sanctions is not allowing money transfers between Russia and any Western countries.
Even if I had the money, I couldn't send it.
Aren't there any workarounds? Yes, yes there are, one I came up with was paying with Discord Nitro and Steam gifts, but I obviously got laughed at for it, as hardworking people want actual money they can spend on anything they want. All other workarounds include overpaying a lot, and with my limited resources I couldn't allow that.
So I was stuck in this loop, trying to find a good model/texture artist who was willing to go along with my terms. And no other progress has been done in the mean time because our Clickteam programmer refused to work without actual renders. I was exhausted by the lack of progress, and any will to proceed with this project was getting sucked out, just as my limited resources I used to just get the new character models.
Internal conflicts also didn't help at all:
• The conflict with FG and all the other people from the original team, which lead to the division of the game into two separate projects and loss of the original game page.
• My personal conflict with Weshek, which lead to me getting banned from the Jolly Gamejolt Community, making it harder to promote the game.
• Disagreements in the direction department. Every teaser or trailer went through many unnecessary renditions because FazCho wanted it his way.
• The FazCho situation.
Thus, after months of development hell, I had finally made the decision to cancel the game on the 14th of May, 2023.
Do I regret this? Welp, I've personally felt some freedom after the cancelation. I left gamejolt and the fangame community as whole, and I rarely even remember about this project anymore. I deleted all my posts related to controversies and the game, only leaving the neutral ones. That's where my involvement ended.
What about the other team members? I can't imagine how hard it was for them to have their talents wasted on this project. Everyones work was incredible, and I wish could share it, but I've sadly lost contact with the members, and uploading their stuff without consent is not something I want to do. I am very sorry for all of them and wish them the best of luck going forward.
I want to thank the community we've built for JOLLY'S/JOLLY Aftermath and apologize for not writing a single word about the cancelation on GameJolt. Goodbye, everyone!
