Something Ate My Alien

"Something Ate My Alien" is a kind of a platformer with puzzle elements and a bit of action.

Now this review is most of all based on a rough impression. The game has a menu screen with loads of features in it, making it at first not very inviting as the game did appear to look a bit complicated that way. But actually, it appears you shouldn't bother yourself too much, as it will become clear over time.

The main portion of the game is where you are as an alien on a planet to mine for resources. With a kind of mine gun you can burn through the dirt, and find resources and bonuses, such as extra health, shields etc. You can use these resources to empower your alien on several fronts, like better mine gun, better weapon to fight enemies, etc. The game does take the time to explain everything at the proper moment and doesn't start too hard so you can experiment things out a little.

Now by judging by this overmap, levels are extremely large, but there are teleporters allowing you to beam yourself back to your ship, in order to get your stuff in order, and that gives also a bit of rest. There are some things to watch out for. You are on a planet with no breathable air for you so you must refill you oxygen packs every now and then, and you must mind gravity. You do have a jetpack but it depletes very very fast. Fortunately it will refill very fast also, but it does put a damper on things, and you need to be aware of this.

And this way you need to mine your way through and always be aware of enemies.

Interesting parts are the puzzle rooms where you must move blocks of a specific color to an area of the same color. (I do not suffer from colorblindness, so I didn't really look for this, but when you develop games like these you must take the existence of colorblindness in mind. I hope the devs did so). The puzzles I encountered in the demo were rather easy, but I guess some brain cracking puzzles can be expected in the full game. These can give you extra stuff, and a token that sets a pretty big fella on the lose.

The art style is pretty neat and clear and fills the theme well, and the audio is just splendid. Thumbs up for putting in multiple difficulty settings. As I was rather looking to turn the game upside down for all cons and pros, I chose the easy setting in order not to bother myself with too much issues. I do therefore not know in what way the other difficulty settings will affect the game, yet I'm always happy when it's there so you can easily start this game when you are a newbie, but also have fun in this game when you are a die-hard-no-life-gamer. Due to the teleporter system, you can play this game thoroughly for some hours in a row, or fill a few quick minutes, as you can get out quickly when you're short on time. So all in all we got ourselves a nice game which does provide some fun.
