The Sans Dillema

Hello, MrEpicIsHere777 here. I’m a member of Team Switched, I do level design and I’m also an assistant coder. Therefore, I’m also a part of the art department and saw the redesign of Sans take place. I realize that his new design has gotten a very, very (mostly bad) mixed response, so I wanted to take the time to address a few of the issues people are having with the design and circumstances surrounding it.

First, the elephant in the room.

Bashing the fandom

I’m sorry. This was really in poor taste on our parts, since we have a such large following of people who love Underswap, Classic or Fanon. We should not have called Blueberry retarded. We should not have bashed the fandom at all either. Personally, I believe that people are allowed to love or hate whatever AUs they want. I know I have called some AUs trash in the past, but that does not mean I want to stop anyone from liking an AU. If you like Swapfell, or Blueberry, or whatever other AU out there, continue liking them! I’ve seen some adorable comics of Blueberry and “Fanonswap” before. No AU there is truly “terrible” if someone enjoys it. I also want to apologize for our attitudes. We’ve had numerous complaints build up over the lack of personality swapping for a long time, and frankly it’s getting to our heads. Some of our team members don’t want to tolerate comments like that anymore, or are very tired of having to address them. We’re under a lot of stress here.

Now, for my biggest concern.

The reason behind calling Classicswap a reskin / The need for redesign

I feel like people were confused at what we meant by this, or at least didn’t understand what we meant. Thus, I wanted to address it. Right off the bat though, I want to know why people thought we were still swapping personalities? I haven’t been a part of the team since the beginning, but I have followed it from the beginning. It was only a personality swap in the very early stages. It’s been very public knowledge for the past few months that we have no intention of swapping personality. Sure, Sans still talked in caps and Papyrus still talked in lowercase, but we had a an in-game reason for that.

As for why we had to redesign him and parts of his character. Well, what are the basics of Underswap?

  • Personality Swapping

  • Clothes Swapping

  • Role Swapping

  • Dialogue Swapping

You see these in practically every comic of Underswap that focuses solely on the Underswap universe. The silent Chara protagonist, the “MWEH HEH HEH” magnificent Sans, the “you wanna have a bad time” equivalent that I can’t remember Papyrus and his flame eye. A lot of these are just really taking the same situation, but putting another character in there instead. …Almost like a mod of the game, right? Sure, we would have the new areas of Ruined Home, Sunnedout, and others, but that could really just be seen as retexturing the game. Kinda like a Minecraft texture pack (it’s the best example I can think of). You can change the looks of the blocks and enemies and even change the language, but it’s still just Minecraft.

So, if we were to do this with classic Underswap, we would run into problems. You would essentially be playing the same game of Undertale, but it looks different. This breaks Toby Fox’s fangame policy, which is the following:

(Source here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Undertale/comments/3z6dq4/toby_foxs_guiderules_on_fangames/)

“Don’t make a whole remake of the entire game or things that discourage from buying the original.” So, if we were to make classic Underswap a game, wouldn’t it really just be remaking Undertale? Not much would change besides the look and some dialogue, it would just really be a reskin. Changing the exterior of the game, but not the interior. No different functions or anything. That’s why I believe that classic Underswap would work much better as a mod to Undertale, rather than a full on game. But, Team Switched isn’t here to make a mod. We’re here to make a game. Thus, we have to change Underswap enough to not break the fangame policy, but still be called Underswap. We aren’t changing the name because what we have can still be called Underswap. The only thing swapping though is the role placements.

But, if you’re still unconvinced, then unfortunately I don’t know what else to say to you. If you want Blueberry in a fangame, go play ManiaKnight’s Underfell fangame. I know he’s in there. Or maybe, find a Unitale battle? Or make one yourself. That wouldn’t be breaking Toby’s fangame policy, since it’s just a single battle and not the whole game.

Other

Now, I want to take a moment to address two other things I saw.

  • Team Switched does not have a GoFundMe and never used a GoFundMe for the game. We don’t need donations. If you have seen one, please send us the link, it’s an imposter.

  • We are not making the game into Inverted Fate. Inverted Fate takes place in a True Pacifist run where Flowey was able to reset the timeline, and it scrambled up the main six characters. Their pre-game choices are swapped and it affects the entire world around them. In our Underswap, the world was always like it was from the beginning and takes a very different direction than Inverted Fate.

And one last thing; please remember that there are more characters in Underswap than just the skelebros. The UT fandom does like to focus mostly on the skelebros, but when more info comes out about the other characters, I hope you can reflect the work as a whole rather than just two characters.

I believe that’s everything then. If there are more issues you have, feel free to shoot me a PM over Soundcloud, Tumblr, whatever. Or comment it in the game’s page, we read every comment. Even the ones asking for a demo. We’re getting there. We’re also trying to find a new middle ground with Sans’s design, but one thing I can guarantee you is this. The old design is not coming back.

Thank you for reading.

(If you would like to hear more, you can read Dorked’s two cents on the whole issue as well. She discusses more about Classiscswap itself and Popcornprince’s original intentions with Underswap: http://megaderping.tumblr.com/post/165895218796/regarding-the-drama-over-team-switched)

EDIT: Yo, Granpris here. I’ve recently made my own post regarding this whole situation and recommend you read it: http://granpris.tumblr.com/post/165942230323/please-listen-for-once
