Undertale Orange Devlog 11 - VERY Big One!!

Hey everyone! Cleer here. Sorry for the long wait, issue after issue has been piling up on us for the last month, but we're back! This is gonna be a big devlog, so let's get started!

Orange's Characters

Things are changing for the better!

A very big issue with Orange's characters is that not a lot of them were connected with the overarching story and each other. A lot of them where really just a fun character concept that we thought of in the heat of the moment when brainstorming for characters. Glad to say that they're now gone!

Of course, they're not *entirely* gone. Some who had a particularly strong connection with the story were adapted, and changed, but not removed.

Here's a complete (Spoiler-Free) list of every named character so far, important or otherwise. If they have a design in mind, be it sketched out or fully developed, it will be shown. Otherwise, they have not been put to paper.

Dante

The guy. The protagonist. You play as him, and see his story through his eyes. Not much to say without spoiling the game!

image.png

Falin

A young shapeshifter who lives in the ruins of HOME alone. Parents gone, she only has the few story books about The Fallen Child she finds scattered around to comfort her, leading her to take a familiar shape. Heavily inspired by what she sees of Dante.

The Penguin (inDev name) / "The Snowdin Menace" (Placeholder name)

A very mean and selfish monster, that despite being a penguin, is always cold. He causes ruckus across the underground, and is a very minor character overall. Still, very important for other characters. He can't speak English.

image.png

The Reporter (inDev name)

A very self centered reporter for the New Home Periodical. Tired of the dullness of the Underground, she chases The Human around in hopes of getting a good story.

image.png

Leviathan (inDev name)

A giant sea monster trapped beneath the ice of Snowdin Peaks. Placed there long before The War by humans. Kept alive by its hatred for mankind.

Sundyne (inDev name) / Sgt. Solace (Placeholder name)

A very proud and righteous member of The Royal Guard. He's a fire spirit within an animated piece of armor. Due to its weight, steam powered hydraulics are needed for it to even stand. Which he fuels with his own flame. regularly harassed by The Reporter in hopes of getting a good story from a Guardsman. (Vastly )Younger cousin of Dick Polter.

image.png

Dick Polter

Ghost detective. Currently merged with the private eye uniform he owns. Veteran of the Royal Guard, old enough to have seen The War. Has a deep hatred for anything human, including and especially shown in his hatred for The Human, Dante.

(His appearance has been changed constantly, and is prone to change in the future. Hence, this isn't anything close to his final design, but rather the current iteration of him at time of writing.)

image.png

The Black Sun Crew

These guys are special due to the fact that despite being different people, they're functionally one big character. They're the local crime group of New Home. They cause a lot of problems for the local Royal Guard squadrons, and would cause a lot more if their crimes were anything near violent.

(I'm sure the designs exist, I myself have drawn them hundreds of times, but no remnants of them could be found. Perhaps I deleted them afterwards? I cannot tell.)

Derek

Local chain store employee in the build site of the CORE project. He's gonna be an actor someday. His future grandson might or might not put burgers in his pants.

image.png

Galliatron (inDev name) / Titanotron (inDev name)

A liquid metal automaton made by The Royal Scientist. He protects the only functional reactor of The CORE. Doesn't have a soul nor sentience on account of being a robot.

Orange's Story

Remade as well!

Despite it being fully planned out, it had a lot of issues we missed at the time. We lost some progress, as we're still working on remaking the Pacifist route while we had it complete before, but this is all for the better!

The story is more concise within its themes, and its characters are more intrinsic to it, rather than decorations. I really wish I could say more, but it'd be spoilers!

The Underground

Main setting of the game.

It was a hard mission to rework it for it to be some level of original and distinct from Toby Fox's game, but we believe we've managed it!

Undertale Orange will take place in The Underground during a time period known as The Rain (Placeholder name). It is a 1 month period where water seeps from the top of Mt. Ebott, collects at the barrier, and comes in all at once. It only happens once every century. It affects (almost )every region in the game to make them more unique and interesting!

Here's a list of every planned and established region (and subregion). This will not change.

The Grand Hotel / Deep Ruins

The Grand Hotel used to be a very fine establishment in HOME during the time it was populated. Right now, it is decrepit and filled with rubble. Few monsters live within it anymore, and its former glory is now gone.

Snowdin Forest & Snowdin Peaks

Two parts of Snowdin seen in the story!

One, well known, is a deep forest that covers most of Snowdin. Currently, it is sparsely populated by campers that are trying to take a breather from New Home's constant rainfall. It snows extremely heavily here.

The other part of Snowdin is its border with The Underground's wall. It is a giant slope that climbs further and further up, eventually hitting the ceiling. It is filled with clouds of steam that come over raining across Starfalls, from Hotland. They're eventually frozen up, and sent back down to Snowdin Forest to blanket the campers.

Starfalls

Colloquial name for Waterfall during The Rain. The clouds that come over from Hotland sometimes erode the ceiling above Waterfall, making some of the shinning minerals that make up its stars fall into the water, making it shine like space itself. The lakes and rivers here are extremely rough, and most of the area is a swamp. Most people have evacuated for New Home, but some few remain due to laziness.

New Home

A giant metropolis at the heart of The Underground. The Rain is a more literal name here than in the rest of the cavern. New Home is ravaged by a constant month long rain that shuts down a lot of industries, but the streets no less empty.

Outer CORE (inDev name) / CORE Project Build Site

A giant build site in the middle of Hotland. Steam regularly fills the area, yet clears up shortly afterwards due to the nearby Reactor 7. Food is expensive and water does little to help cool off from the magma below.

The entire construction is dedicated to building a giant facility that will bring free electricity to the entire Underground, called The CORE, and designed by The Royal Scientist.

Inner CORE (inDev name) / Reactor 7

The only finished and functional reactor of The CORE. Inside it, scientists and robots constantly calculate streams of data given by screens across the interior.

Reactor 7 is a hot place filled with random streaks of magical electricity that fly around the interior.

Battletest

Oh boy! New battletest update, eh? I'm sure you'd expect us to keep claiming about how hard it is to code, and keep giving you excuses, but no!

Battletest is almost entirely finished. That's right! And we're releasing a combat demo to show that when we say that we want to make a fangame, we mean business. We're not here just to tell you a story, but to give you a game, after all.

If you're unsure as to what Battletest is, exactly, then let me tell you that Battletest is the name of the project where we've been trying to recreate UT's battle engine from scratch. It's been a rough time and a dozen or so failed prototypes, but we're almost there!

When will we release it? Hard to tell, but the most reasonable answer would be within the rest of the week. Hopefully sooner than later!

The Demo

But what about The Demo proper? Not Battletest, but the mix of the battle engine and overworld engine. Well, with Battletest almost done, it's easy to say that we're closer than ever!

So, will there be a Demo? Yes!!! When? No idea, hopefully soon! As we work with the idea of "It's Ready When It's Ready."

Orange, Us, And You

2busy and I really love Orange. It is something that comes deep from our hearts, and we want to share it with the biggest amount of people as we can. Currently, I'm working on some promo art to see if it drives engagement, but I do have to humbly ask you to spread the word! Tell your friends about it! Don't be afraid to interact with us in comments of our posts. No question is stupid and no comment is irrelevant.

Orange would be nothing without you. We both are extremely happy that you've accompanied us these past few months.

Thank you for everything so far. We hope for a happy future for all of us and Orange!
