Undertale's Anniversary

Hi guys!

I can’t believe that Undertale has already been around for an entire year! It’s an amazing game and I’d just like to talk about it for a bit.

First of all, let me just go out and say that Undertale is a beautiful game. It came out at just the right time and got the attention of many people on the internet, including me.

If I were to make an original game myself in the future, it would be heavily inspired by Undertale. It just got everything so right that even though it doesn’t look fantastic, everything about it is just breathtaking. The story, the soundtrack, the characters. Phenomenal. Hell, even the sprites have a place in my heart.

I draw a lot of Undertale doodles in my notebooks at school, and it was during the time I drew these that I came up with the idea for my fan-game Uppertale. I talked about the idea of a full-length fangame with my friends (as nothing like that was around at the time), and they seemed to like the idea.

So development of Uppertale started, and it changed my life.

Up until I found Undertale, I hated the genre of RPGs. They seemed tedious and repetitive, and I did not like them at all. I wished for a game where it was only the good parts of an RPG. And soon enough, I found Undertale!

It completely changed my outlook on not only RPGs but gaming as a whole.
This… this is what a video game should be like.

You’ve got big companies trying to make the next big thing, going all out with grand orchestral music and top-quality realistic graphics, and sure it looks great, but it doesn’t feel special. There’s many other companies trying to do the same thing, and soon enough people get used to stuff like that and don’t find it appealing or interesting anymore.

No other game is like Undertale though. Undertale is one of a kind, and that’s what got people’s attention.

MS Paint graphics, bit music, what’s so great about it?

That’s what people thought going into Undertale, only to discover it was so much more.

No matter how hard big companies try, they will NEVER be able to top what an indie developer or an indie team can do. Indie games have character, they aren’t influenced by what other companies are doing, they are their own thing. That’s what big companies fail to understand.

“Oh, we need the BEST graphics! The BEST music! The BEST voice-actors! We need to top every single game EVER MADE!”

Yeah, that sounds great, generic large company, but all the other companies had the same idea too. Your game isn’t special.

That’s what makes Undertale so fantastic, it didn’t try to be anything really big, it was just originally a small game with some interesting characters.

Now look at it, it’s a decently sized game (averaging six hours) and that’s just for one route.

Another great thing about Undertale is how it has THREE different routes you can take: Pacifist, Neutral, and Genocide. And depending on what route you do and how you do it, it GREATLY impacts the story and environment. No other game does that. There are games that allow you to not hurt anyone, but it isn’t the focus of those games, you can just do it if you feel like it, there’s no reward.

So to top it all off, Undertale is the type of game I want to make when I’m older. I want to make a game that has the type of impact Undertale had. I’d love for kids to doodle characters from my game in their notebooks. It would feel really gratifying, just like how Toby feels. These fan-games of Undertale I make are like practice for making that one great game. I’m learning so much, and I love every minute of it, even when I feel less motivated, I still love it.

Thanks for everything, Undertale. I didn’t know where my future was heading, but now I think I have a clear path. I want to make games. I want to make music. That is my passion.

Thanks for reading <3
