URP to HDRP Rendering + Progress!

Hey everybody, its been a bit, and we've been working hard to try getting this working. A huge issue we have been dealing with is lighting, and it has held us back for months, but more about that later. First, lets go over what we've done.

Characters + Content

First of all, the game is much more than just a bean walking around on a flat earth, a temporary map of the restaurant has been made and is being used for testing. Not only do you have a flashlight, BUT YOU CAN TURN IT OFF AND ON. I know, huge stuff. A interaction system is already in the works and we have plans to allow items to be picked up and used to survive, the mechanics of the animatronics have been determined and we've decided on the final cast. (Quotes from Scaiden)

  • Randolph the Rabbit, can walk through halls and vents at a moderate pace.

  • Calico the Cat, can go through vents at a very fast pace, goes through halls slowly and quietly.

  • Old Henry (change name), can walk through halls and hides behind corners or doors to trick players.

  • Wolfie (change name), can walk through halls and charge the player at fast pace.

Names are not set in stone, nor are the mechanics, but you can expect the animatronics to act similarly in the final game. Individual AI for the animatronics isn't done, but the basic AI is, they will path find to you if they see you, and attempt to catch you.

Lets talk lighting.

It has been a nightmare, the game was made using Unity's URP (Universal Render Pipeline), as it was recommended. Turns out it was a horrible choice, URP Forward Rendering only allows for a max of 8 lights, aka, nothing. We attempted to use Deferred Rendering/Shading but couldn't get it working, finally today I gave in and started importing the game into HDRP (High Definition Render Pipeline), and already it looks 5 times better and even runs smoother it seems. I will be linking a video containing everything done so far.

Final Words

I'd like to thank everyone for the support and staying with us for so long, this game has been in the works for over a year now and that was just us trying to figure out what to make, we have so many ideas and I can't wait to implement them. You can expect a closed beta to start in the next few months, and around 5 people will be given access to it. You can let me know in the comments if you would like to be considered. I'll be picking people who could give feedback and propose future ideas.

I'll be making another post soon with more updates and hopefully an approximate date for the closed beta.

I made a TARDIS from Doctor Who while I was waiting for something today.

This is the only scratch game I've ever made, it's related to a song from one of my favorite bands, saw a post of someone making a scratch game on gamejolt and it reminded me of this

If you'd like to play:

The textures are a bit funky still, gotta fix that repitition but it looks 10x better than unity, the sky also isn't dynamic while the fog is, which makes the lighting a bit off sometimes.

Just finished the 2nd Doctor's TARDIS from Doctor Who in blender. Might use it in a game.

Looks like I’ll be able to hit my goal of a minimum of a rtx 2060, if not lower, also sneak peek at one of the locations
