At long last, the awaited Purgatory mode is finally here! Taking inspiration from TOO MANY NIGHTS by ITDEER, this new game mode is the biggest update yet! Featuring 36 penalties, 35 bonuses and 25 characters, this update is packed with new content!
For those unaware of Purgatory, the game mode features gameplay similar to that of TOO MANY NIGHTS, in that it transforms the concept of Five Nights at Freddy's into a roguelike. Each night, which lasts only 90 seconds for constant quick gameplay, you must select a new character to add to your run, and on some nights you will have to add a penalty as well, which makes the gameplay more difficult or increases enemy's mechanics. To help you out in the increasingly difficult cycle, a shop will appear every few nights that you can spend your earnings on to unlock powerful bonuses that work to counteract penalties and improve gameplay!
There is also another feature made for Purgatory, that I may apply outside of the game mode in the future... The speed multiplier. In Purgatory, the speed multiplier is set to 3, instead of 1 which is used in the rest of the game. The speed multiplier makes characters, time, and power drain all faster. This is used in Purgatory to easily make a way for the difficulty to match the 90 second nights. However, within Purgatory exists 2 penalties that drastically affect the gameplay: "Speed of Sound" and "Speed of Light". Speed of Sound increases the speed multiplier by 1, and Speed of Light increases the speed multiplier by 2. This allows for the speed multiplier to be up to 6, which is 6 WHOLE TIMES FASTER THAN THE NORMAL GAME.
Both of these penalties are unavailable by default, and must be turned on in settings with the "Speed of Light & Sound" setting. I did this because these two penalties will make your score unable to be added to the leaderboard if selected, for balancing purposes.
It's still pretty experimental, though, so please let me know of any bugs that may occur.
Besides the Purgatory mode, there are also plenty of new characters being added into the game! These characters will be sure to make the gameplay experience much more enticing and flavorful!
Along with new characters comes some updates to already existing ones! A new feature, "tag teams", has been implemented. The possible tag teams can be found in the characters section of the extras menu.
How do tag teams work? Well, when a certain two characters are active in Purgatory mode, there is a 2/3 chance that they will join together and merge mechanics for the night, labelling them as a tag team. These changes are slight, but aim to make them more effective against you, or just be more difficult to deal with in general. Current tag teams will be listed in the changelog below. Credits for this idea goes to @worldtrademark !
(I hope you're ok with me borrowing this idea btw it's so peak and fits my game so well)
When playing the campaign or custom level, tag teams will not occur, unless you have the "Tag Teams 100%" modifier active, in which case all possible tag teams will occur.
Whoops, did I forget to mention modifiers? Well, the custom level now brings 7 of them! These modifiers will be in the changelog, but what they basically do is grant small debuffs to your night to make it more difficult. This offers a more challenging way to play the game for those who aim to play the game more competitively.
Also, if two people get the same score on the leaderboard, the score with more modifiers will be placed higher, as they are each worth around 0.1 points, just for the sake of having them higher on the board without actually changing point values. The leaderboard will also now display how many modifiers were used in a level.
Another character-related feature that I would like to announce in this update is the addition of one of the Baldi's Basics characters to the Freddy Fazbear's Pizza section! Baldi is now playable in this section, with his own unique mechanic differing to that of which he will have in the Baldi's Schoolhouse section when it releases.
Besides all of that, there are TONS of balancing and quality changes, to make the gameplay more enjoyable!
The cameras have been sort of overhauled, with flickers appearing when characters move and when switching cameras. There are also screen effects that play which makes it feel more fluent, and can be disabled in settings.
Cameras also no longer use power, as it made them much less usable. Instead, power now drains 5% faster than it used to-to make up for this change. It may need to be increased to 10%, but I'm not so sure yet.
Most camera characters can now also be cam stalled! If you are watching a character on cameras, they will move 20% slower, except some characters like Freddy who will move 75% slower. Foxy can be cam stalled from any camera.
Have fun enjoying all of the new content! The changelog can be found below.
CHANGELOG
-Added Purgatory game mode! Inspired by TOO MANY NIGHTS by ITDEER.
-Added Volume Settings.
-Added screen mechanics that directly effect the canvas itself:
Office light flickering causes the entire screen to darken and flicker, instead of just the office sprite itself.
Characters will cause the screen to blur and zoom out slightly when exiting the office.
The screen will slightly rotate and zoom in when opening cameras.
The screen will zoom out when wearing the mask.
Chica the Killer will remove all saturation from the screen while in your office.
-"What You're Up Against" pre-level section now shows character difficulties.
-New bonus levels added to campaign. Interactable characters can be found on certain levels, which will activate bonus levels when talked to.
Sparky can be found on level 6 behind the building, talking to him will begin "Hoax Hell".
Golden Freddy can be found on level 4 to the left of the entrance, talking to them will begin "Bear Blitz".
Hybrid can be found on level 3 on the road. Talking to it will begin "Door Lurkers".
Your Boss can be found as a dial-tone telephone on level 5 to the right of the entrance. Talking to him will begin "Immovable".
-Sections within the game that include an up and down arrow for scrolling (custom level character select, purgatory, what you're up against...) can now be interacted with using the mouse scroll wheel or the arrow keys.
-Removed Cutscenes. They were poorly animated in SFM, did not match the game's art direction, and didn't make sense or add anything of value to the game. There may be new cutscenes in the future that fulfill the aforementioned needs.
-Added custom music button for the custom level section. Pressing this button will prompt you to open an audio file, which will be inserted into the game and played when you play the custom level!
-Modified Fazbear Entertainment to wait longer between calls.
-Added skins to the custom level. You can select skins in the character configuration.
-Power now drains 2.5% slower for balancing.
-Camera and mask flip are now more ergonomic and flip based on where your mouse pointer is, not whether it is touching the mouse pointer or not. This prevents the issue of flipping it up and then immediately back down as you move your mouse up.
-Hybrid's music box is quieter.
-Fan's hitbox is better. Clicking any part of the fan will not make it deactivate, as previously it would only do so if you clicked the blades, outer circle or centerpiece, which made it sometimes difficult to click.
-The FNaF 1 "Cold Presence B" ambience now plays during nights 4 and 5, alongside the "Giant Hollow Tube Sector" ambience, which changes volume based on how close certain characters are to the office (similar to FNaF 1).
-Foxy's "Cove Carousel" song now only plays when he is active if it is either night 3 or the custom level. In the rest of the campaign, it will not play. This is so that the new more ambient feeling of certain levels is not obstructed by his music.
-Made some door characters leave 0.5 seconds after closing the door (Stuffed Freddy, Endo 01, Bonnie).
-Cameras do not use power.
-A short flicker occurs when switching cameras now.
-Power now drains 5% quicker to account for the cameras no longer using power.
Added Cam Stalling:
Foxy can now be cam stalled in any level except for night 3. Having the cams on will reduce his speed by 20%.
Freddy can now be cam stalled. Looking at him on cameras will slow him down 75%.
Sparky can now be cam stalled. Looking at him on cameras will slow him down by 20%.
Rabby can be cam stalled. Looking at him on cameras will slow him down by 20%.
Chica the Killer can be cam stalled. Looking at them on cameras will slow them down by 50%.
Jebediah Kerman can now be cam stalled. Looking at him on cameras will slow him down by 20%.
Endo 01 can now be cam stalled. Looking at it on cameras will slow it down by 20%.
Stuffed Freddy can now be cam stalled. Looking at him on cameras will slow him down by 20%.
Chica can now be cam stalled. Looking at her on cameras will slow her down by 20%.
Bonnie can now be cam stalled. Looking at him on cameras will slow him down by 20%.
-Added plenty of new characters:
Your Boss: A dial-tone telephone will appear on your desk with a sticky note reading what time you must call your boss by, as well as a 4-digit code that you must enter into your phone to call said boss. If you fail to call Your Boss by the time stated, a pink note will replace the sticky note and you will be jumpscared by the dial-tone telephone shortly after. Hovering your mouse over the phone will open a small popup that you can type the four-digit code into, and getting it correct will remove the popup for the remainder of the night as well as ringing the phone. When the phone is finished ringing, Your Boss will answer and say something random and unrelated to the game with no effect at all. Then, he will say a random voiceline that does in fact effect your game, and does so as soon as Your Boss picks up the phone. The possible effects Your Boss can cause includes:
-Overtime: The night will last one more hour.
-Door Jam: The doors have a 1/3 chance of not closing when trying to close them.
-Bye Bye UI: The time, power and usage are all unable to be seen for the remainder of the night.
-Faulty Cameras: The cameras have a 1/3 chance of being faulty when switched to. This will cause the static to become almost completely unable to see through. To fix the error, reopen the cameras or switch to another one.
Evil Horse: The Evil Horse will appear as a collectors item on your desk monitors, and will remain there the entire night. Over time, the radioactivity bar will fill up while you are not wearing your mask. Wear your mask to lower the radioactivity bar. If it fills completely, the Evil Horse will jumpscare you and end your night.
Chica the Killer: Chica the Killer will say "Where are you?" And begin to materialize on a random camera. When she materializes fully, she will move to your office. When she enters, put on your mask until she says "Take off your mask" in which you then take off your mask. Do not put your mask back on until she is gone. Credits go to @worldtrademark
for some ideas used in making this character, including the desaturation effect when she enters the office.
Phantom Bonnie: Phantom Bonnie will appear while you are switching cameras, and begin to materialize. If he fully materializes, which can be prevented by turning off cameras or switching to another one, he will jumpscare you, disabling your cameras periodically.
Wet Floor Sign: The wet floor sign will be in the center of the office, and will remain there until it occasionally moves to one of your open doors while you are on cameras. When it moves under the door, that door can not be closed, and you must double-click the wet floors sign to move it out of the door's way and back to the center of the office. Credits go to @Gamemaster_64
for the suggestion of this character.
Baldi [From Baldi's Schoolhouse section]: Baldi will appear in your office, holding a You Can Think Pad with a question on it. Press the corresponding number on your keyboard to what you believe is the correct answer to Baldi's question, and repeat doing so until he leaves. Baldi will ask a random amount of questions ranging from 1-3, and getting any wrong will result in a game over. Also taking too long to answer a question will result in a game over.
Rabby: Rabby will be in parts & service, silently lighting his eyes up at random intervals. Watch him while he is active until he deactivates.
Grey: Grey will appear in your left door window, then move into the doorway, and then into the office. When in the doorway, Grey will block the door. Press the "Reset Grey" button in the cameras to push him away, but this will disable your cameras for a few seconds.
Endro: Endro will appear in either the left door window, right door window, or in the center of your office. Open the panel at the top-left of the screen and press the button that corresponds to his location to send him away. Pressing the wrong button or taking too long will result in death!
-Added Tag Teams:
Iconic Duo [Bonnie & Chica]: Chica will not leave the kitchen until Bonnie has reached the left hallway, which he now automatically selects instead of picking between either the left or right hallway. Bonnie will also no longer "dilly dally" and will head straight to the office as soon as possible. Bonnie is also slightly faster. When Bonnie moves to the office doorway, so does Chica.
"Empty" Suit and "Empty" Robot [Stuffed Freddy & Endo 01]: Endo 01 will now move every time that Stuffed Freddy moves, and will arrive at the office at the same time. Stuffed Freddy is also slightly faster.
Ring Ring [Fazbear Entertainment & Your Boss]: Your Boss will now announce an extra debuff that causes Fazbear Entertainment to call you twice as frequently.
Staredown [Sparky & Rabby]: Sparky will be slightly faster, and Sparky and Rabby will sometimes time their activations together.
-Added Modifiers to Custom Level:
Tag Teams 100%: Will make all possible tag teams guaranteed to occur. This is helpful for when people want to do more skill-based runs and not rely on RNG.
Monochrome: The entire game will be completely desaturated.
Overtime: The level will last an extra hour.
Heavy Mask: The mask will function similarly to the way it does in the Generator playstyle in Purgatory mode, in which it will take longer to take off. Additionally, it will now stop doors from being closed or opened while being worn.
Faulty Cams: The faulty cameras effect from Your Boss now applies the entire night automatically. When switching cameras, there is a 1 in 3 chance of it blurring up.
Blackout: The office light will be turned off, plunging you into partial darkness for the entire night. Despite the office light being turned off, you're still draining power by default... Just don't ask about that.
Door Jam: The door jam effect from Your Boss now applies the entire night automatically. When closing doors, there is a 1 in 3 chance of it not closing.
