I’m not sure if anyone reads devlogs these days, but I’m here with a big update for Backrooms!
What’s new?
Google Cardboard Virtual Reality support for Android
A brand new game mode named ‘Deaf Mode’ where headphones are not required
Android support for any android device with Android version 4.4 (KitKat) and higher
Difficulty levels in Classic Mode now fades the objective sound instead of spamming enemies every second :))
Virtual What Now?
Since Mobile VR is the cheapest way to play VR (and the fact that I don’t have a powerful PC), I’ve used Google Cardboard’s SDK to add a VR mode to Backrooms. All you need is an Android phone with any Mobile VR Headset, VR Viewer or even a VR Lens!
See this tutorial I made for Backrooms on how to setup VR and what are the requirements: Backrooms VR Setup Guide
Is Deaf Mode Only for Deaf People?
No! What makes you think of that?! Deaf Mode is a new game mode for Backrooms that don’t require the player to hear game sounds to play. Basically, headphones are not required anymore! You will find the objective by guiding doors. When you go through a wrong door, you will experience changes to your body that makes you become one with the ‘Friends’, and if it’s the right door, nothing happens to you. Friends won’t backstab you in Deaf Mode, but they will kill you if you stare at them for too long!
While headphones are not required for the Deaf Mode, the Classic Mode still needs sounds to play; so don’t throw away those headphones yet!
Difficulty Levels Now Actually Work!
You will notice an obvious change in how the Classic Mode works: Objective sound is not continuous anymore! You will hear the finish sound at first for a while and then it fades away, don’t worry though, objective sound will play again but it would be silence for a long time if you’ve chosen a high difficulty.
“Play on the Go”
I’d lie if I say VR Mode wasn’t inspired by this, but DayQuil23 first mentioned this concept and I agreed with them! Backrooms didn’t have any mobile build because of the Classic Mode needing sounds to play (Most people are not comfortable with wearing headphones each time they play a mobile game), but with Deaf Mode coming in this update, there was no reason to not include an Android build!
I hope you enjoy this update; if you have any questions about it, leave a comment here. Thank you all for playing and supporting this game after all these years!
