What's the story?

Hello everyone,

I've seen talk come up about Left to Rot's "weird" story repeatedly over the past year. Usually, the conversation is about how the story makes no sense, why it has no lore, and why it should be just... ignored.

It makes sense to me why it's so confusing, in hindsight. I attempted to build a complex story without providing sufficient information about what is even going on. The idea was that everything would be told through implications, whether it be in dialogue or environmental design; you have to DIG to figure it out.

Without much of a good base provided for this game's story, it would be very hard for anyone to interpret these implications, and what exactly they would imply—it was too cryptic.

Before adding my own ideas into the story, I used Scott's story as a base. You know, things we do know about the game's story—like dates, names, characters, etc. No plot points were removed, only added upon. So in my story, I added on some theory ideas that I thought would be interesting to explore, like the real nightmares and FNaF 4 experiment theories. Yes, they may be far-fetched, but Scott hasn't outright said they're false. I haven't considered these theories to be true, at least not since the Sister Location days. This game also is based on the idea that most characters are being controlled rather than possessed, if you were wondering why even the non-possessed characters can move around.

Question 1: Who are MAX and Mousiki?

  • They are supposed to be some of Afton's scrapped characters. MAX is in the storage room because he didn't fit with the main cast of characters. He's being controlled by Afton during the "Storage" game segment. You can actually see Afton inside of Suit on top of MAX's mini-stage during his jumpscares. Mousiki is supposed to be the first animatronic Afton ever created, but scrapped it to not get into legal trouble with "certain other" pizzeria-animatronic entertainment centers that have mouse characters. Mousiki's origin was explained in my first finished fangame called "Fredbear and Friends: Out of the Machine". This should have been explained again in LTR, but I didn't consider it at the time.

Question 2: Is Test Room 01 implying real nightmares?

  • Yes, they're real in this series.

Question 3: What are the Withered animatronics doing in Test Room 02?

  • These are not the same exact Withered characters you see in FNaF 2. In this series, Henry owns the rights to the Fazbear crew (Freddy, Bonnie, Chica, Foxy). He left Fredbear's Family Diner to create his own pizzeria, featuring the Fazbear crew and his own versions of Fredbear and Spring Bonnie, being Golden Freddy and... Spring Bonnie. Afton moved his set of Fazbear characters down to Test Room 02 for experimentation, slowly rotting away over time. I guess you could say Fredbear and his friends were... left to rot! (from the lack of business)

Question 4: What is Suit?

  • It's William Afton's "personal" springlock suit. It's used for fun, dancing, and practicing murder.

Question 5: What is the Spring Bonnie suit?

  • In the "he must be stopped" teaser and in the Observatory, you can see a Spring Bonnie springlock costume. The original script for this game had a greater focus on this suit, as it was originally used as a mechanic and a way to represent the player. I still consider it to be a representation of the player, although the game never directly shows the player sneaking around inside of the suit.

Question 6: What's the Security animatronics' purpose?

  • They are supposed to be guarding the mock Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria, while standing in as miniature versions of the Fazbear characters. Fredbear is the stand-out there, it's a wonder where Foxy went. I genuinely don't remember why there isn't a Security Foxy instead of Fredbear. Anyways, if anyone is caught down in the mock pizzeria, they are to be used in Afton's experiments. (No one has been caught, except the player if they lose)

Question 7: Why is there a mock pizzeria under the building?

  • It is a totally unrealistic plot point to have this, but I did it with Scott's insanely deep-constructed Sister Location building in mind. Essentially, Afton built the mock pizzeria to formulate/practice his plan for doing the missing children's incident. If you look around the mock pizzeria, you will see signs pointing to the safe room, where it is rumored that he lured the kids. There is an "X" beside Pirate's Cove, where he did some killings as seen in the "Go! Go! Go!" minigame from FNaF 2. There is a newspaper clipping in the pizzeria detailing Freddy Fazbear's Pizza's great success over Fredbear's Family Diner, implying it is Afton's motivation to do the MCI—to run Henry out of business, out of pure jealousy.

Question 8: Why are you at Fredbear's?

  • This plot point is a bit confusing. A detective is assisting the player to look for their son who was kidnapped for one of Afton's experiments. It doesn't make sense for the detective not to go in themselves—it's really weird. It should have been explained further in the game, as the focus became mostly about what Afton is doing in his crazy building.

This isn't the entire game's lore, just explanations of the things most people were very confused about. I'd rather settle out confusions than let them go on forever. It's better to have "interesting mysteries" than "frustrating confusions".

Thanks for reading!

(If you've skipped ahead, then you're a very bad sneaky guy person)
