Chickens lay eggs every thirty seconds, which is halfway through the day, or halfway through the night. This means that you can use chickens as clocks.
Second off: New Features for Upcoming 1.2 Update
Hoes: You can make these to till soil and place seeds to grow wheat.
Axes: You can make these to get more wood from breaking trees.
Iron tools: You can use these to get more loot from using them.
TNT: You can set these off with wood to break/kill anything in its explosion radius.
Fellow Humans: These are NPCs that you can trade iron for items, or items for iron with.
