I really, really wanted to like this because Maximum Carnage was my favorite Spider-Man game of all time until Marvel's Spider-Man, but... there's just too many glaring flaws for me to be able to really enjoy it.
- The music doesn't loop, obviously fading out, stopping, then restarting
- Every time the music changes, there's a message at the bottom of the screen that says "Now playing: ||||4| by ||2" or something equally garbled
- Even at maximum volume, sound effects seem far too quiet
- Some of the changes are pretty arbitrary and annoying (e.g. Shriek randomly attacking you from above with no warning at the end of the first stage, Doppelganger just being invincible and never letting up off you in the second stage)
- The story cinematics aren't quite executed up to snuff, with the entire intro lacking any text boxes at all and at least one subsequent one just immediately showing all the text at once instead of one bubble at a time
- While I won't argue that Spider-Man's more MvC-style fighting here is cool, it's kinda crummy that there's not a more original game accurate version as well (unless I missed it)
- Various little details, almost certainly due to limitations of using a pre-existing engine like OpenBOR (e.g. the complete lack of signaling Shriek's attacks in stage 2, the weirdly different way Spider-Man's swinging was implemented, having to manually pick up health and the like, etc.)
I don't HATE this, but... it's not polished enough to stand in for the original from where I'm standing.
Nice Game
Maximum Carnage Remake
The game starts with 19 characters from Marvel's urban universe, in addition to the Fantastic Four and Captain America. Another 12 characters are unlocked after the game is finished, including Spider-Man villains, Carnage himself and even Stan Lee. Maximum Carnage for SNES and Sega Genesis is possibly the most faithful game to the comics that I've ever seen. For those who don't know, one of Shirek's powers is Dark Empathy: She can bring out people's Dark Side. During the Maximum Carnage comics, she used this power to make the city go crazy, which is why in the game you face ordinary people on the streets. Which is good on one hand, but a bit annoying, because in the original game you face Carnage several times before the final battle, just like Shirek, so in this remake we made some changes, such as street enemies from Venom/Spider-Man: Separation Anxiety, Shield Agents instead of police officers, and in one of the battles you face in the original game once again all the bosses from the game in addition to civilians, here we will have the Sinister Six, and lastly a bigger version of Carnage so as not to have a repeated last boss, based on the MUGEN character from T.O.P.S and theFuTuR3. Another change is the cutting of cutscenes, because some didn't make sense, like Venom joining the team and Captain America as a sidekick, even though here they are available from the beginning of the game.
This game is free, like everything we've done here in the last 15 years, but I've only been able to dedicate so much time to all these projects thanks to the financial support of our supporters. Thank you very much and have fun!
