Date: December 21st, 1990
It all began with a seemingly minor mistake—a glitch. On this day, developers were running tests on the Tokyo Show prototype, ensuring everything was functioning smoothly. As they played through the iconic Green Hill Zone, an unexpected error message appeared on the screen: "Illegal Instructions." Confused, the team immediately started searching through the game's code, looking for anything amiss. However, nothing appeared out of the ordinary. When they attempted to restart the game, it refused to open, stubbornly remaining closed.
The developers grew concerned and meticulously examined the code once again. This time, they discovered an unusual error embedded deep within Sonic's code, causing the game to crash unexpectedly. They tried to delete the corrupted data, but it resisted, almost as if it had a will of its own, reappearing every time they attempted to remove it. Suddenly, the screens flickered, and the entire system began crashing one by one. The lights in the room dimmed before abruptly going out.
In the pitch-black darkness, two glowing red irises emerged, hovering behind one of the developers. Before anyone could react, agonizing screams echoed through the room, filling it with pure terror. When the lights finally flickered back on, the developers were discovered dead, each mutilated in horrific ways. One had their eyes gouged out, another had their jaw gruesomely ripped off, and the others were left in similarly brutal states. The police were baffled when they arrived—there was no evidence, no explanation, nothing that could make sense of the massacre.
Afterward, when the authorities uncovered the corrupted prototype, they quickly deleted it, hoping to rid themselves of whatever had caused the calamity. But the corruption did not vanish; it persisted, festering within the void of discarded data, creating a world of its own. And from that dark digital abyss, the entity known as BETA was born. (the main villian of the game.)
