Amazing mod, songs are 10/10, cutscene animations rival that of GameToons, and the Voice Acting sounds professional af!
Hey y'all! Just wanna let you know I really enjoyed the mod, SU was a big part of my childhood and this definitely captured some good energy! I wanted to give a few notes I came up with during the mod on some improvements and also stuff I really like
Art - 10/10
I've always adored this Spinel art, and the poses for the sprites are just *chefs kiss*. Really captures the zany feel for the character and I enjoy the color palette.
Animation - 7/10
I really enjoy the animation, but I feel like there's a lot left to be desired. Most of the spinel animations are 3 frames and really don't show any movement, which I feel is very important for the rubberhose style. You're supposed to see the movement, not just see the aftermath and implication. I'm not saying full James Baxter frames, but I feel like it needs a tad more to nail the style Spinel is supposed to capture.
Music - 6/10
I do enjoy the music for this mod a whole ton, but on the same end I once again feel like there's a lot left to be desired.
Most of the issue I face with this OST is that some of the songs lack much punch or emphasis with instrumentals and voices.
For example, in the original version of other friends there's a punchy synth bass to emphasize the electro swing feel. This bass is completely absent in the mod's version of this song, and thus leaves a very large gap in the sound with no low end. The synths are very light, and thus a lot of the songs feel and impact is lost in the remix.
In Injector-Carousel, I feel like the feel does pick up quite a bit with the addition of what I assume is acoustic bass about halfway through, but I feel like the mix drowns it out a lot. The song is help by the fact that the drum groove has a lot better feel, and the synths feel like they're on a consistent track since it's an original song and it doesn't have an expectation for a certain feel.
I feel like Unchangeable picks up a lot better on synth and bass, but falls behind in the beat department. I like Amen Break as much as the next guy but it kind of lessens the impact for the first half of the song. ON THE OTHER hand the second half is absolutely perfect, I love the motif and animation that fits to remix Change, as it's one of my favorite SU movie songs as well.
On top of this, The voices I feel are very lackluster.
For Spinel - The voice just doesn't fit the character for me. Have gotten so used to both Sarah Stiles and Kittensneeze's versions (Which are both similar, I like the vocal feel), I think this mod's vocals just have too much of a growl to the vocal town, and feel more like a robot voice than a humanoid.
For BF - The main week songs REALLY have a lot of problems with the BF voice that need to be adjusted (But they should be fairly easy adjustment).
First of all: FIX THE OVERLAP. In way too many of the triplets and eighths I can hear overlap in BF's notes, which just sound sloppy. As well, the exact opposite issue of overlap is also very present, which is too much space. Just because the notes you press in the chart are short does not mean you have to make the notes in the song short. I feel like these large spaces between notes create huge gaps in the songs sound and can really leave the instrumental out in the open when you want it to be the background.
And besides that, the other issue is that some parts of the songs have the BF voice going WAY too high on some parts and the solution is extremely simple. Putting a part an octave down can exponentially improve it if the voice is going too high. Nine times out of ten someone will prefer a sound that's slightly too low to a sound that's way too high in pitch.
Charting - 9/10
I'm gonna be honest, not a fan of the heart gem notes. They just feel like a lot of visual clutter that wasn't really a necessary addition to the mod and they really tend to throw me off reading the charts.
Besides that, I'm a fan of these charts. The modcharting is extremely well done and the actual charting brings enough difficult to be interesting but still remains fun. I would prefer slightly more to these songs (Especially Unchangeable) to give it a bit more difficult, but I understand if the team wanted this mod to have more of a relaxed feel.
Overall this mod was a solid 7.5/10 and I'm really excited to see what comes next! I hope all of the team the best success!
I wonder why they made her that evil while she is not in the movie
