Break Free will take place in a post-civil war America. Not the historical one, but one that happens in 2156. B.D. Days (the main character) was the old leader of America. A rebel group rose up from a man named Major Abaise.
Major Abaise was the leader of the military when America won the fifth World War. Abaise was the person who decided to launch the first nuclear weapon in over 100 years on what we would consider a China/Russia super country called Hostis. Right after that missile was launched, America discovered a new method for nuclear shielding that protected it from all missiles. The funding for this force-field was funded by the Days administration. Even though President Days knew that we had the shield, he refused to launch the missiles. However, Abaise went rogue and launched the missile anyways. When Hostis saw multiple cities had been destroyed, the launched a counterattack. Only to discover America’s new shield sooner than Days wanted them too. Soon after, America and Hostis came to an agreement to not use any WMDs in the upcoming war, World War V. As these types have wars have always shown, spies will steal information. Trials for Hostis spies and conspirators took place, and those that were found guilty were sent to an underground prison. At this point, the population of America had risen to 4 billion. This is reasonable because they have also taken over most of North and Central America, including Canada, Mexico, and Cuba. Robot warfare has been on the rise. Because it is easier and more man-power efficient to train people to make robots that fight, instead of fight. That is what America does. Unfortunately, within the first few weeks of the war, Hostis EMPs out-powered America’s robot anti-EMPs. This led to the first ground troop on ground troop combat in over 100 years. Due to this, over 100 million Americans died in combat. That made it easy for Abaise to target Days for “starting” the war. The war ended when both sides decided that neither side could win. Basically mutually assured destruction, but because of the sheer amount of people that each nation had.
After the war came the rebellion. Abaise released many propaganda videos that claimed Days started the war. This led to a large uprising. Because Abaise had control over the military, he used it to overthrow the Days administration. After a 2 week stakeout at the capitol, President Days was stuffed in the same underground prison as the Hostis Spies during WWV. Because the prisoners were allowed to watch the news, they heard about the country’s hatred for Days. This led to him getting mocked and beaten daily. The new government built a second layer of the prison, just for him.
As the new military dictatorship grew in strength, it turned into fascism. Abaise didn’t want the spotlight, so he found a young, handsome man to be the face of the government. Similar to a Big Brother figure, General Sorriso would live as a puppet in the capitol. While the population was still supporting the new government, Abaise plotted the Traxedia. The Traxedia is the imprisonment of everybody that has connections to Hostis, or says any bad things about the new government. The punishment system will be written by Abaise (Might actually write this later) and includes 12 levels of punishment. He extends the underground prison to be 15 layers. 12 for the 12 levels of punishment, 2 for graveyards, and one specifically for Days. The prison has the capacity for over 700 million people, a massive construction. After the prison is full, the rest of the accused spies and betrayers would be executed. Around 90 million people. Their bodies were burnt as a power source for the city.
The prisoners work essentially all hours of the day. They do hard labor. Most of their efforts are worthless, but the body heat is used as power for the country above. Levels 9-12 are used solely for power. Hampster wheels, hand cranks, and other turbines are used to convert human power, into electricity.
Life on the surface isn’t as nice as our America. Because it has turned into a Fascist government, it is much like North Korea. People work in factories on war supplies and other sometimes useless materials that are simply burnt. Most of the power that the country makes goes towards the nuclear shield, or to the large spy efforts that America has on its people to catch more traitors. The people of America are forced to think that the rest of the world is their enemy. Abaise is attempting world domination and it is becoming more possible by the minute because of the large work force of prisoners and normal people.
B.D. Days is stuck in level 15 of the prison, and people are regretting their decision to imprison him. He wants to escape, so he tries.
The rest is up to the player.
